But no one is hiring!
Right. We need to start developing a underground black market and resistance.
There are jobs out there, unconventional maybe, but they are jobs all the same. At least they will help pay the bills and get us out of the house in the morning!
Easy to say when your Joseph Farah and have an established internet “empire.”
Not so easy to do when you’re 50 years old, got layed off from your job of 25 years, and nobody’s hiring, especially not older workers.
Been there, done that, still have the sandwich guy hat. Nevertheless, in a climate when even the fast food restaurants aren't hiring, I'm thinking people need a bit more than to be told that they're lazy butts unless they get out and start selling nachos buy the roadside.
After 18 months and a 4 month stint in a production factory at $8.70 p/hr., I'm driving again with better money.
Not ideal, of course .. but at my age .. you can't prove age discrimination.
I'm happier now.
That’s about the size of it.
Other than making basic ends meet, what is the motivation for working harder?
Check Craig’s list, the newspaper, post signs on a telephone pole, that’s what we did. Speaking of nachos, one friend sold empanadas door-to-door. They didn’t loose their house. We can beat this guy and not roll over. Life will be different for awhile but don’t let the bas****get you down!
Focus groups are jammed with applicants willing to take $25 for three hours of work; by the time the ad hits the papers, all places are filled these days.
I find articles like this insulting. They suggest that those of us who are looking for work are being snobbish or are refusing jobs that are beneath us. This is not true. We are simply not being hired when we do scratch and hustle. Many of us can’t even get interviews.
Obviously from someone that is employed.
Sorry this has nothing to do with the depression or what things were like then.
1. Few ompanies in America have a Human Resources Department anymore.
Most are outsiourced or those that doare likely a quarter of the staff they had in years gone by.
I have been to dozen of places to apply for jobs. “Sorry, we don’t have any applications here. You ahve to apply online”
2.You apply online and 9times out of1o allyou get is an acknowledgemnt that you applications was sent to the adress and received. No calls or letter or contacts back. When 300-400 peoleapply forone job no one is going totake the time to respond to anyone but the one they hwant to hire.
3.You call a business and try to speak with someone. Good luck with that. (No one is in) (we don’t have a HR dept here) (or you get an automated service that tellsyou toleave your name and number and someone will get backtoyou)Good luck with that too.
People with college degrees are apply for security officer positions
People that worked in the majorfactory for 25plus years are trying to catch on at McDonalds.
As long as assclown Obamma is President there will be ZERO new jobs. Everyone is afraid of what he will do next. Obama Care Cap and Trade Porkulus Bills and TRILLIONs of new deficit dollars. No one is going to start a business. No one is going to try and grow theior business. Everyone is just trying to ride it out to Obama is gone.
Been there, done that: 25 years of upper management experience, ran a 60 million sales organization,
Delivered pizza for six months until I found the right job. BTW, I made about #12 an hour after gas.
Yeah, I hustled my ass off.
I would have shoveled cat poop off the sidewalk to not go begging or spend what little saving I had
I live in Michigan.
Yep, no new businesses these days. So, you are right, we ride it out and try to hold onto our homes (if we are fortunate enough to have one), cars (ditto) and dignity.

Jim Thompson is the Underground Black Market Czar......but don't tell anyone.
Do you have any skills such as home repairs, computer repairs, house cleaning, yard mowing, etc.? If you do you don't need anyone to "HIRE" you! You start your own business!
It took us eight months to find anyone who had time to remodel our home. I know people looking for people to do all of the above. You just need to ask around (network). Get the word out that you are available for ANYTHING that you have experience at.
You may not have 'benefits' but your can make a living and some of it can be in CASH. I would take advantage of making CASH in this environment over benefits (especially if Obamacare/CRAP & TAX passes).
My husband and I were both laid off from Microsoft in early May. We were both top performers and both promoted within the last year. I had been with the company for almost 10 years, he had been there for 6. We received a very good severance package that included COBRA funding. We also collected full pay and benefits for 60 days after our jobs were eliminated. On top of that, we can both collect unemployment.
As soon as the 60 days ended, I had a difficult decision to make. All the jobs in my field went to contracting/staffing agencies. The pay for those jobs is half of what I was making before I was laid off and equal to my unemployment payment. I looked at the market and made the decision to go back to work even if the pay sucked (and it does). I did 8 interviews in one week and was offered a contracting job last week. I took it and start this coming Tuesday.
Believe me when I say this was a pride swallowing decision for me, but I know I am doing the right thing. Starting over at 50 is not a lot of fun, but there are opportunities out there. Attitude and presentation is everything and with everything that's happened, I remain positive.
My husband has also started interviewing and has good prospects for something over the next few weeks. :-)
