GPS, On-Star, etc. (Vanity)
me

Posted on 07/25/2009 5:34:50 AM PDT by native texan

How much tracking does On-Star do with your auto? If you don't have a contract with them, can your car still be tracked? If you do have a contract but have it turned off, can you be tracked? And what about cell phones...can the government trace you even though you have it turned off?

YES, the Fed.gov can track you through OnStar, and can ALSO listen in to your private conversation inside the car, without your knowledge, and without even getting a warrant! They can ALSO track you, even with your cell phone turned off. To be SAFE, either leave it at home, or at least turn it off and REMOVE THE BATTERY!

A side note for this thread.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a hand-held gps that would be good for hiking AND running. Something that tracks your route when you are jogging and can also be used for waypoints and hiking routes.

Thanks

I have now lead lined my car. Every night, I move all my "stuff" to the car so they can't find me.

Wait, I'll be right back...the phone is ringing...."Yes, this is Hilda MacIntosh", can I help you??

I'm back. Just a wrong number.

Geez, it’s worse than I thought. Almost all the new car models have the On-Star capabilities. I guess that info stands for any of the GPS tools also...

But, at least the GPS’s don’t have mics, so they can’t listen in on you. I think you should be able to buy a non-GM (Government Motors) car without an OnStar-like package, though.

I've looked at them. They seem to have one for people who run and another group for hiking and using waypoints. I would rather get one that can do both but there's not a whole lot of choices.

Most Americans are UNAWARE that the computers in most new cars are ALSO like the Flight Data Recorders (black boxes) in airplanes. They are the FIRST things lawyers and insurance companies ask for, in serious accident cases, because they will reveal your speed, steering inputs, braking inputs, and vehicle skidding just prior to impact. They can and WILL be used AGAINST you!

Of course they can.

Question is, why would they want to ?

You CAN disconnect OnStar from power, and remove the battery from your cell phone. But unless you have actual reason to believe you’re being tracked, why bother. It’s not like we all don’t leave data trails a mile wide everywhere we go.

The only way NOT to leave a trail, is do ALL your transactions in cash, and preferably person-to-person, not at a store. And even so, it would just make it more difficult to be tracked, NOT impossible. . .

Your vehicle has a microphone for Onstar.

Put it on a manual switch.

I would love to just take mine out hook it up to a battery pack and with a recording of some sort of people discussing buying nuclear weapons, and strap it on a burro and let it loose in the desert.

Or put a magnet on it and slip it on a democratic neighbors car.

Sometimes I just want to be alone and undisturbed.

No Garmin, no On-Star, no cell phone (usually) in the car.

Plan your route ahead of time. Use a map. Stop and use a pay phone if you must.

Saves a bundle of money too.

Thats the crux of the problem, as much as there really is a need for Onstar services by millions there is probably an equal amount that view it in the same respect as having socialized health care.

WE

DO

NOT

WANT

Just a note...I do historical work. I keep a log of my waypoints and the date. I just occasionally list and log them particularly before erasing any points.

I'm not sure why I started it...But I did find myself going back almost 20 years to find out "when" I was in a certain place.

Depends primarily on how you want to use a GPS. If you primarily jog then I’d suggest the Garmin 305 or Garmin 405. If you want mapping capability I’d go with the Garmin 400t or the Garmin 60CsX. If you want to really spend the $$$ go with the Garmin Oregon.

Not necessary anymore - in fact the Feds want you to believe it because it suits their purposes.

What they actually use is the RFID chip injected into every baby during “routine” vaccinations. They tell you it's for the measles...sure.

The ECHELON system is what interrogates the RFID on a constant basis. And they can track you around the world, day or night, rain or shine.

I heard they can tell the authorities how fast you were going in a crash.

Here is a story a woman at work told me. Her friend crashed into a tree drunk. Onstar registered the crash and sent the cops, hence he was arrested for DUI. If this is true, I don't like drunk drivers on the road, but I don't like a service playing nanny stater either.

OK, I wanna know.

HOW can a turned off cel phone be tracked. Do you have a technical explanation for how the device transmits when it is in the OFF position (I don’t mean the standby condition).

If the device is electrically off, the cel phone towers CANNOT read the ESN and your phone cannot be tracked. I write this as a former HQ employee of a cel phone company.

Yes, removing the battery absolutely work, but I seek evidence that a cel phone in the truly OFF condition is trackable by the commercial cel phone network.

I am ready to be enlightened.

BTW, what you saw in Enemy of the State is NOT possible with today’s “No Such Agency” technologies.

AND they’ve also perfected long-range RFID and integrated it into the new higher-power metro WiMAX services like CLEAR.

You also get implanted whenever you are anesthetized under 0bama’s socialized medical care system.

Remove the fuse from the fusible link to the On-Star system.

Re-assemble/re-connect same sans fuse.

You are then un-trackable via On-Star

I doubt it. A GPS is one of the best aids ever invented if you travel. If you mostly stay home, there is no need.

FWIW, GPS is not a “tracking” system, it’s a navigational system. It uses the GPS satellites like a sailor uses the stars to plot a course. The maps are part of the receiver software, not part of the GPS system.

Cell phones with GPS capabilities use the satellites to determine their location and then send that information to the local network, so they can figure out which antennas to use to communicate with a given phone. They do this even if you are not on the phone since they need to know where to find you for an incoming call. They don’t do it when your phone is off. In the old days they tried to locate you by triangulation of signals received at different towers, which is less accurate and more expensive. This capability has been used by police to track specific cell phones.

Nstar is just a GPS navigation system with cell phone capabilities, nothing particularly different about it.

If your GPS is not connected to a cell phone, or other communication device, no one can figure out where you are when you use it. Buy a Garmin or TomTom if you just want GPS. You can always communicate via short wave, but don’t stay in one place, because they do have radio direction finding equipment.

BTW, did you know, that like me, Hank Hill was born in New York City?

I find TomTom useful for unfamilar destinations. Even for familar destinations, on long trips, it gives you a heads up about the distance to go, time to go and distance to next exit.

On star give a lot of false readings around here. When there is an accident in one of the canyons where on star does not work it give the last reading reported. The emergency personnel have to search the canyon to find the vehicle.

It’s also a God send when you move to a large city! No more map books! No more having to write down detailed directions. No more stopping for directions. I love my GPS. I just moved to Jacksonville, FL and use it all the time. It’s only given me bad info once. Jacksonville highways are in a constant state of construction and it led me to a non-existent exit. I just got off at the next exit, drove a mile or so and hit “detour”. :~)

I would just like to say that all these modern day devices that save lives, help people in trouble and possibly prevent deaths are useless when controlled by interests that have an anti-American agenda.

The problem is that we need to remove the cancerous control of our nation so that we CAN safely use devices like this without fear.

Though I will still disconnect my Onstar anyway, less work for the charging system.

Mercedes now comes with an On-Star type system (different company, same nanny features) and Chrysler is fixing to put them in their models as well (bankruptcy slowed them down, but on track now).

The gov’t wants these systems so they can tax drivers by the mile.

Also, the telephone company has had the ability for decades to listen in on your land line even when it is “hung up” and not being used.
