Tony Romo broke up with Jessica Simpson on Thursday, the night before her 29th birthday, a source close to the pop star tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"She is heartbroken," says the source. "She loves Tony. But it's been difficult lately. He's busy with his career and she's getting ready to shoot her show (The Price of Beauty). They decided to part ways."

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback fueled breakup rumors when he showed up with about 14 friends at the Hollywood hotspot MyHouse on Friday night without the birthday girl, a source tells PEOPLE.

Maybe it’s the ‘rescue’ factor at work. She puts on the ditzy act and makes the man think he is a knight in chining armor.

Of course, perhaps the fact she tried to cheat Nick out of his rightful share during the divorce and spread abuse rumors might have scared Romo off too. If she was showing an interest in marriage, maybe he realized what it might be like after she lost interest in him.

As for her porking on the pounds, her wardrobe choices leave a lot to be desired too. When I read about how people are supposed to ‘respect Jessica’s choices,” they forget that entertainers are supposed to please the audience, not themselves.
