Al Qaeda Leader Spent Weeks in USA

By

Paul L. Williams, Ph.D.

thelastcrusade.org.

After years of speculation, the rumors finally have been confirmed.

Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed were not the only top al Qaeda operatives to spend some time in the U.S.A.

Osama bin Laden made the trek from Saudi Arabia to the land of the free and the home of the brave in 1978 with his first wife Najwa and his son Omar.

The account of the trip is reported by Najwa bin Laden, Osama’s first wife, in Growing Up Bin Laden, soon to be published by St. Martin’s Press.

Najwa describes towing her two babies to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she remained while her husband headed off for some shadowy business in Los Angeles with Abdullah Azzam.

Azzam, one of the founders of al Qaeda, established a recruiting office for the jihad in the al-Farooq Mosque at 512 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. In a 1988 videotape, Azzam can be seen and heard telling a large gathering of black Muslims that “Blood and martyrdom are the only ways to create a Muslim society.” His remarks are punctuated by rapturous cries of “Amen” and “Right On, Brother” from the audience.

In the nineteen seventies Osama Bin Laden was seen on occasion at the Bin Laden/Bin Mahfouz compound in Houston, Texas in the company of his brother Salem Bin Laden (killed in a San Antonia air crash in 1988). Even then he was a little wierd.

The date 1978 used in the article must be a typo. 1988 is more like it. Bin Laden did not accompany Azzam until after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979.

I’ll bet he did visit Michael Jackson. I also suspect that bin Laden is operating a discount liquor and convenience story in suburban Maryland right now.

I think I saw him the other day in his store. A tall foreign gentleman, hair slicked back with gobs of pomade. He kept checking himself out in the security camera-monitor as he lip-synced to “Brown-eyed handsome man”.

More likely he's hiding out in Plainfield, Indiana. The Islamic Society of North America is headquartered there.

That's an Indianapolis "suburb" ~ his wife(first one) has relates and friends in the region.

Once “Growing Up Bin Laden” (St. Martin’s Press) shows up in your local Borders, there will be scores of posts about this book. When FOX-NEWS, CNN, etc. get their hands on the book, everyone will be discussing the revelations.

Obviously you have not read the article...just the comments. Seriously, you should find a more interesting way to spend your summer vacation....school will re-open sooner than you think.

How odd.

Around October 1978, I was driving in the high Desert of Calif. I was on Hwy 14 going East, and just about into the town of Acton. A yellow Jeep (Wrangler or CJ), without a top, passed me at a high rate of speed. In it, were five Arab looking men, and it sported a bumper sticker in Arabic.

They came up on me so quick and passed me like I was standing still, it caused me to jump in my seat. I honked and waved my arm as if to say WTF? They slammed on their brakes and pulled over, but didn’t stop. I came up on them on my right, and they waved a rifle and handguns, and were screaming in, I think, Arabic.

That shook me. So, I slammed my brakes on, and spun around to the opposite direction, and put the pedal to the metal. I weaved across the road erratically, in case they fired at me, and I knew they couldn’t catch my Trans Am, still, I was pretty shook up.

I got to a roadside stand and I asked to use the phone to call the cops, but the guy running the thing said “no need, we already did, they were here and harassed us and scared the hell out of us with their weapons”. A few minutes later, the CHP showed up, and took our reports. The cop said that they had several other reports coming out of Antelope Valley, and had dispatched a helicopter.

I never heard or saw another word of this. I even had a friend who worked at KFWB (all news, all the time-LOL) dig into it. He came up dry, as well. The only thing he could find was a drug bust on that date in an unincorporated area of Palmdale called Four Points.

During that time, I know we had an awful lot of Iranian immigrants in SoCal, but most of them were “Persians”, and wanted nothing to do with the, then, current political problems...or so they said.

Through his brother Jermain conversion the Nation of Islam had pretty well taken over Mjj’s life. They surrounded him and provided the nanny, body guard, financial consultant, doctors, etc.

If you watch carefully there has been a struggle on who controls what. At least for the funeral the Christians won. Jermaine did not get his way.

He had just recently tried to remove many of these influences from his life. Check out the faith of the doctors who were “caring” for him. It is not too far fetch to think that the NoI got rid of an infidel, who had once considered joining their group..

The Bin Mahfouz/Bin Laden compound was located in the posh River Oaks section of that town. I believe the estate was sold by Bin Mahfouz to a Houston resauranteur sometime in the nineteen nineties.

There was another error. Sheikh Azzam was not a founder of Al Qaeda. That occurred in August 1988 when Osama Bin Laden and a score of friends met at Khost and initiated what later came to be known as Al Qaeda. Azzam was later assassinated, reportedly by Islamic Jihad mujahideen who were commanded by Ayman al-Zawahiri, then Bin Laden’s associate.

From the co-author[ess] Jean Sasson

Initial post: Jul 7, 2009 8:26 AM PDT
Jean Sasson says:

Hi, this is Jean Sasson. Admittedly, this book is very different from anything I have ever written before, as I generally write about individual women’s stories, women who have undergone traumatic events while revealing enormous courage and fortitude. Readers of my books generally care very deeply about the women I write about, whether Princess Sultana, Mayada Al-Askari, or Joanna Al-Askari, all of whom had very different stories. This book is about the family of Osama Bin Laden. I had no idea what to expect when the project first began, but now, after 15 months of working with and coming to know this lovely woman and her honorable son, I must say that I not only respect them both, but care very much about their well being. I sincerely feel that readers will open this book with the greatest curiosity, and will come away caring deeply about these two brave and wonderful people. So I am looking foward to the books being available and hearing from readers. As always, I feel humbled that so many people read my books and grow to love the people I write about.

Inane? I find it interesting. Certainly bin Laden’s main squeeze has a bit more insight into the Al Qaeda leader than any of our American commentators.

Maybe Plainfield, a sleepy little town founded by Quakers just outside of Indy. There is a Mosque there that always looks abandoned. They also have a huge penitentiary and they are swarming with Feds, prison guards and a huge local police department.

Hi, this is Jean Sasson and I worked the past 15 months with Najwa and Omar to make sure this story came to life. In fact, Osama knew AZZAM several years before 1978, and before they worked together in Pakistan/Afghanistan against the Russians. Indeed, it was 1978, two years after their eldest son was born and a year after their second son, Abdul Rahman was born. While in Indiana they visited a doctor for Abdul Rahman — Najwa was left with a girlfriend in Indiana for a week while Osama traveled to LA. So, it was not a typo — it’s the reality. Although Osama had traveled to London and had a semester of school there, he had not traveled to the USA with Najwa until that date — they never returned together, either... In those days, the Saudis were our friends, and Osama was a big hero later when he devoted his time and energy to the war in Afghanistan. President Ronald Reagan named the fighters heroes. IT was only later that Osama became our enemy, a year or so before the Russians departed Afghanistan.
