Years Pass, but Brooke Greenberg Remains a Toddler. No One Can Explain How or Why.

Brooke Greenberg is the size of an infant, with the mental capacity of a toddler.

She turned 16 in January.

"Why doesn't she age?" Howard Greenberg, 52, asked of his daughter. "Is she the fountain of youth?"

Such questions are why scientists are fascinated by Brooke. Among the many documented instances of children who fail to grow or develop in some way, Brooke's case may be unique, according to her doctor, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine pediatrician Lawrence Pakula, in Baltimore.

I really doubt she’s the fountain of youth and that her organs aren’t aging. Some switch turned off at 16 months somewhere in her growth and mental functions but not aging.

The arrested mental development could apply to about any DemonRAT. The fact that she doesn't physically appear to be aging is intriguing though.

I wish I could be 23 forever.

And if I could go back to highschool, oh BABY! Knowing what I know now, those cheerleaders wouldn't be laughing at me today!

yup. blood, hair, and tissues.

and to be clear... she is more like a baby then a toddler. they even say she looks like a 6 month old baby. this just makes it that much weirder. 16 years and hasn't aged at all.

on a side note... i sure had to dig to determine the area of the country/world (baltimore)

it appears to be the opposite of that condition that causes people to age at an accelerated rate.

Brooke goes to a Baltimore County public school, Ridge Ruxton, dedicated to special education. Based on her age, she would be a junior in high school. Jewel Adiele, one of Brooke's teachers, said she wonders sometimes what Brooke is thinking or perceiving.

it appears to be the opposite of that condition that causes people to age at an accelerated rate.

Some years ago there was a story about a boy, 10 years old, I believe, who was the functional equivalent of an 80 year old man.

In a local news report on the story (I don't recall where it was), the male anchor commented after the story, "Boy! At that rate, he must have been frustrated by the time he was 2 1/2!"

This was met by unrestrained guffaws in the studio.

True story!

"We love her just the way she is," Melanie Greenberg said. "We don't want to change her."

Many will say I am cruel and don’t understand, but I think that is an incredibly selfish thing to say.

I want my kids to grow up and be adults. I want them to be independent, to pay taxes and hate it every time they look at their pay check and tax return.

If this child truly is an example of arrested aging this child will out live her parents and her siblings and perhaps her siblings’ children.

This child will always be a constant burden to her family. She may be a joy to her family today but when her parents die will her sisters want to pick up that burden when they have families of their own?

Will this child end up a ward of the state? Who knows?

These parents find their perennial baby a joy today but when they are in their 90’s I think they will be worrying about her future and wondering what will become of her when they are gone. .

I think this is one of the sadist stories I have read in a very long time. I grieve for these people.

At about 16 pounds and 30 inches, 16-year-old Brooke Greenberg has not aged significantly, physically or apparently cognitively, since she was a toddler. Doctors hope that her case could shed light on the mysterious genetics behind aging. (Courtesy Greenberg Family)

So if the "switch" was turned off on a twenty-five year old they would stay mentally 25 but keep looking 25 into their 60's? Umm, and the problem with this would be....?

That was the second thing that came to my mind. The first was a school district eager to collect government funds for another “special needs” student. Of course that requires the cooperation of the parents so maybe they are equal.

Actually from what I have heard from teachers and school administration is that these kids are a real drain on pubic funding, it requires hiring physical therapist, nurses and other non-education staff. These kids have no place being in public schools.
