Police Shoot Pit Bull, Save Collie In Dog Fight

Posted: 5:14 pm EDT May 31, 2009

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Police had to taser a pit bull twice before shooting it to end a vicious dog attack in Washington County.

The pit bull attacked another dog on Broad Street in the City of Washington.

"I had to get that dog off him. He's all tied up and I didn't want my dog dead."

Donald Jacobs and his wife Vicky said their one-year-old collie named Buddy was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull as they sat outside their house around 11 p.m. Saturday.

"I was hitting the pit bull on the head and everything else, trying to get him off," said Donald Jacobs.

Vicky Jacobs said, "I was petrified. I was horrified- all the words you can think. That was it. I was scared."

As Donald Jacobs tried to get the pit bull off Buddy, his wife called Washington police.

When Officer Matthew Karlowski arrived, he found Donald Jacobs tangled up in a leash still trying to pull the pit bull away.

Karlowski said he used his taser on the dog twice but the pit bull kept getting up. The officer then drew his gun and fired.

"Donald was clear along with his dog and I had to use one shot to put the dog down," said Karlowski.

An animal control officer removed the pit bull.

Karlowski said, "The dog was very vicious and the dog appeared to be on a frenzy."

Donald Jacobs plans to take Buddy to a veterinarian on Monday but the dog is expected to be OK.

Yeah, "beating up another dog", that's all it was. That's what pitbulls do. They're harmless except, every now and then they get in little skirmishes.

You're an idiot.

Your pitbull gets anywhere near my dogs and I'll shoot it.

A**hole.

It's not run for the hills, it's get your children inside and pull your revolver.

My shitzu was mauled by a pitbull. Guess what the a-hole owner said: "Oh, he was so sweet, he loved my kids, he never hurt anyone."

Lemme guess, your pitbulls are so sweet and sensitive; until they rip some kid's face off.

Keep your Mexican fighting dogs in Juarez, where they were born and bred.

Don't buy into these little girls screaming about dogs; it is a different dog every 5-10 years. Let them scream. Tomorrow it will be heavy metal.

Chet and I are not familiar. Don't blame him.

I meant no threat against a female Freeper, male Freeper, or anyone else. Only the vision of my Shitzu retreating to the back of my AC unit as a pitbull continued to attack and claw at him, even after his owner beat him repeatedly with a golf club.

To this day he's not the same dog.

From:910kennels.com

In America, the Pit Bull flourished. It was one of the most popular breeds, highly prized by a wide variety of people. The Pit Bull was used to represent the US in WWI artwork; popular companies like RCA and the Buster Brown Shoe Company, use the breed as their masctos. A Pit Bull named Petie starred in the popular children's television series, Our Gang; a Pit Bull mix named Stubby became a decorated WWI hero. Pit Bulls accompanied pioneer familes on their explorations. Laura Ingalls Wilder of the popular Little House books owned a working Pit Bulldog named Jack. Famous Individuals like Theodore Roosevelt and Hellen Keller owned the breed.

Some dogs are more prone to biting and some are more prone to killing, and they aren’t necessarily the same.

Guess which dog is most likely to kill? If you guessed the pit bull you would be correct.

There have been many news reports about deaths caused by dogs in the USA. The attention given to the homicides has put the spotlight on pit bulls and Rottweilers. There is a very good reason for focusing on these two breeds: in recent years, they have usually been the number one and number two canine killers of humans. (See below, The breeds most likely to kill.) It therefore is correct to single out those two breeds when talking about canine homicides, because those two breeds lately have caused half or more of the deaths — a disgraceful statistic whether it is regarded as the fault of the dogs, their breeders, their owners, or all three.

I’m sorry, context?

I find irony in this post. My brother was attacked by two collies when we were children. The dogs were very bold. They came into the yard and attacked him with many other people around. I was younger and smaller, but they chose to attack my older brother.
My point is that any dog can look like the monster depicted in the ‘pit bull’ - second photo posted. The innocent loving collie in the first pic does not accurately represent the two collies that attacked that day. I had a great fear of dogs through my childhood because of those COLLIES!
I learned over time that it wasn’t collies, german shepherds or any specific breed, but had more to do with how the dogs were raised and trained.

".44 180gr. HP. ,,,open fast,,,no “bounce” like a .45 HB,,,"

Around my place, there aren't any people or houses nearby and none for miles that aren't in plain sight. So 325 grain WFN .45 Colt bear rounds at 1300+ fps will do it just fine, if there's no time for loading the lighter, faster, jacketed HP pit bull/varmint exploders. ;-)

[Such loads are for a few particular large frame revolvers only. Don't try those loads in your .45 without checking reloading manuals to make sure that your revolver will handle them and only after using the recommended starting loads and increments.]

Readers:

Pit bulls are most certainly not American in origin. They were bred from English white terriers, black and tan terriers and bulldogs in Britain. They were first brought here by Irish immigrants during the 1800s along with a few other problems. The dogs have been banned in the UK for a long time.

"But,,,I need a bullet that opens fast in this neighborhood."

Agreed. ...light and soft rounds for populated areas.

"I've killed 4 hawgs with 240gr. handloads(HOT)with this .44. (largest 250lbs.)"

Those will certainly take hogs--bigger ones, too. Speaking of hogs, bear, and the like, the population explosions of some animals around our USA are somethin' else, aren't they? ...don't know how the antelope herds here are growing and spreading out with the rapidly increasing numbers of predators and all, but they're making it so far. Every time the elk come through, the predators follow and leave only lower leg bones and hooves here and there (probably mostly moutain lions followed by coyotes, as most of the hooves are from large elk).

Though some dog breeds seem to have more individuals which may tend more toward aggressive, uncontrolled, unexpected stuff than others.

Bully(fighting) dogs fought in pits. Some, like English Bull dogs, were bred for bull & bear baiting. Others, like English Bull Terriers, were bred for street fighting. Pit Bull is a loose association of dogs including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and any random, smooth coated dog between 20 and 150 pounds that scares someone.
