Why do they give race horses such crazy names?

I looked for any other reason for this one, but, it appears to be a family thing.

His Daddy is Birdstone and his Mommy is Mining My Own.

Because each registered horse has to have a unique name, and most normal names have already been taken. Frequently, the owners will use pieces of the names of the sire and dam, but they don’t have to. As a bit of trivia, it took eleven tries to give Secretariat a unique name. Barbaro’s name came from an old painting of hunting dogs.
