Iran Court Will Hear Appeal of Journalist’s Case

TEHRAN — The head of Iran’s judiciary said Monday that he had ordered the “careful, quick and fair” consideration of an appeal against the eight-year jail sentence imposed on an Iranian-American journalist, one day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged the chief prosecutor to reexamine the case.

Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, Iran’s highest judge, issued a decree to the head of the Tehran court, calling on the appeal to be “considered at the appeals stage in a careful, quick and fair way,” Iran’s official IRNA news agency reported.

President Ahmadinejad had urged Tehran’s chief prosecutor on Sunday to examine the case of Roxana Saberi, the Iranian-American journalist sentenced to eight years on charges of spying for Washington, and an Iranian-Canadian blogger, Hossein Derakhshan, who has been jailed since November without any official charges.

She will be released thru her appeal and the US will thank Iran profusely for this gesture of good will.
