Opening Day
Me

Posted on 04/05/2009 6:19:12 PM PDT by cubsfanconswoman

Any thoughts from my fellow baseball loving Freepers out there? Predictions Hopes?

And who's a lesser known guy on your team we should keep an eye out for?

TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Sports
KEYWORDS: baseball; cubs; mlb; sports
Last year I was shouting the name Geovany Soto from the rooftops and he was Rookie of the Year.

This year I'm telling people watch young starting pitcher Sean Marshall.

I think the Cubs won't win 97 again but have a team better suited to go places in October.

I think the Cincinatti Reds will surprise.

My second team has become the Cleveland Indians because they have my boy Kerry Wood.

And here's a song for today

Opening Day By Terry Cashman

Verse 1:

I've been counting the days in the winter haze since the leaves began to fall Now it won't be long til the sun comes shining through when the camps start breaking my spirit awakens to that irresistable call of that old american song that's always new

Refrain: And the robin is here the sky is so blue there's a band there's music and the flags are flying too The grass is so Green it's like never before It's opening day I can be a kid once more

Verse 2: Will the champs repeat in the summer heat? will the races go down to the wire In April every team has a chance to wear the ring and a rookie phenom who tore up the farm and the fans who never get tired of chasing the dreams that dance in the air every spring

Refrain

Verse 3 Open the gates and let the people in Let the sun shine in And the home team always win (okay not in Houston where the Cubs are)

The robin is here

And can anyone who’s also a football fan tell me what a quarterback does? Being a Bears fan as well I’m not so sure.

Wind Chill of 20 degrees with snow showers here in St. Louis as the Cardinals open their quest for their 11th World Championship.

Me? I’ll stay by the fire.

Wife and I spent ten days out in Mesa watching the Cubbies. Soriano is still the laziest player I’ve ever seen. I don’t care if he hits a homer every time he leads off, he’s LAZY!!!

Gotta love Fontenot at second with Theriot by his side.

DP Lee...he needs a long rest, Haufpauer will do fine at firts. Fukodome, send him back to Japan. REED owns center. I do like Miles and Bradley, think they will be fine...

We win the division again and make it to the Big One...after that...who knows? Cubs in SEVEN???

The Pirates will be the surprise team this year.

No, not like Tampa.

They could lose 115 games.

Thankfully we Burghers have the Steelers.

And can anyone who’s also a football fan tell me what a quarterback does?

The quarterback is kind of like the state child support enforcement division, only there can be no more than one quarterback under center to start a play. They take the ball from the center then give it to someone else. They almost never keep it for themselves, especially at the higher collegiate and definitely not at the NFL level. In the NFL there are monstrous freaks(think 6'3 245 lbs, running a 4.5 40 yard dash) who pretty much make it so the quarterback gets the ball out of his hands as soon as possible.
Additional responsibilities for the quarterback include dating/marrying the hottest models/actresses and peddling stuff on commercials. Good starting quarterbacks are paid about 12 million a year.

Manny can’t do it all. Clayton Kershaw, a 21 year old lefty pitcher for the Dodgers. The Dodgers’ historically vaunted pitching isn’t there this year, so if they have a chance to repeat as Division champs, Kershaw will need to have a breakout year. During his first year (last year) he had an ERA of 4.26 and 100 strikeouts and 52 walks over 107 innings. He has a curveball that’s virtually unhittable—it appears that it is going behind the batter before it curves into the strke zone.

Go Dodgers!

Since you mentioned the Cubs...

1. My prediction is the Cubs will go the same place they always go in October - home.
2. Here's the song for today:

A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request
by Steve Goodman (1983)

(You can play a clip here)

By the shore's of old Lake Michigan
Where the "hawk wind" blows so cold
An old Cub fan lay dying
In his midnight hour that tolled
Round his bed, his friends had all gathered
They knew his time was short
And on his head they put this bright blue cap
From his all-time favorite sport
He told them, "Its late and its getting dark in here"
And I know its time to go
But before I leave the line-up
Boys, there's just one thing I'd like to know

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League

Told his friends "You know the law of averages says:
Anything will happen that can"
That's what it says
"But the last time the Cubs won a National League pennant
Was the year we dropped the bomb on Japan"
The Cubs made me a criminal
Sent me down a wayward path
They stole my youth from me
(that's the truth)
I'd forsake my teachers
To go sit in the bleachers
In flagrant truancy

and then one thing led to another
and soon I'd discovered alcohol, gambling, dope
football, hockey, lacrosse, tennis
But what do you expect,
When you raise up a young boy's hopes
And then just crush 'em like so many paper beer cups.

Year after year after year
after year, after year, after year, after year, after year
'Til those hopes are just so much popcorn
for the pigeons beneath the 'L' tracks to eat
He said, "You know I'll never see Wrigley Field, anymore before my eternal rest
So if you have your pencils and your score cards ready,
and I'll read you my last request
He said, "Give me a double header funeral in Wrigley Field
On some sunny weekend day (no lights)
Have the organ play the "National Anthem"
and then a little 'na, na, na, na, hey hey, hey, Goodbye'
Make six bullpen pitchers, carry my coffin
and six ground keepers clear my path
Have the umpires bark me out at every base
In all their holy wrath
Its a beautiful day for a funeral, Hey Ernie lets play two!
Somebody go get Jack Brickhouse to come back,
and conduct just one more interview
Have the Cubbies run right out into the middle of the field,
Have Keith Moreland drop a routine fly
Give everybody two bags of peanuts and a frosty malt
And I'll be ready to die

Build a big fire on home plate out of your Louisville Sluggers baseball bats,
And toss my coffin in
Let my ashes blow in a beautiful snow
From the prevailing 30 mile an hour southwest wind
When my last remains go flying over the left-field wall
Will bid the bleacher bums adieu
And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue

The dying man's friends told him to cut it out
They said stop it that's an awful shame
He whispered, "Don't Cry, we'll meet by and by
near the Heavenly Hall of Fame
He said, "I've got season's tickets to watch the Angels now,
So its just what I'm going to do
He said, "but you the living, you're stuck here with the Cubs,
So its me that feels sorry for you!"

And he said, "Ahh Play, play that lonesome losers tune,
That's the one I like the best"
And he closed his eyes, and slipped away
What we got is the Dying Cub Fan's Last Request
And here it is

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away,
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
When I was a boy they were my pride and joy
But now they only bring fatigue
To the home of the brave
The land of the free
And the doormat of the National League

People are talking about the Cincinnati Reds. They apparently have nice pitching (and in the matchbox they call a ballpark they need it). I geuss most people assume the Cubs will win the NL Central (some people think they'll make a July trade for San Diego pitched Peavy and they'll do better in October than they have done the last couple of season. In the NL East it's the Mets and Phillies but if the Braves pitching pans out they could be OK. Keep in mind the Braves will have Hudson back in August which will have the effect of a late season trade for a pitcher. In the NL West I would bet on the DBacks unless the Giants come together. Of course you have to figure the Manny Ramirez will blow up somehow in LA land.

As for for the AL East, probably the three best (I geuss) the yankees to get the wild card. I'll pick the Indians in the ALCentral and maybe the Angels in the NL west.

I'm a Cubs fan, too, so I predict I'll be frustrated come September.

On the plus side, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Cleveland will all suck as usual.

Naw. That's the 2012 World Series. When the Cubs and Red Sox meet in the Series, it will be the last one ever ;-)

First game for my Tigers is in Toronto tomorrow. Good thing it’s not in Detroit because it looks like they’d be playing in the snow.

Once again...I will raise my prayers to the Heavens for my dearly beloved...and heartbreaking favorite BaseBall team...The Cincinnati Reds.

And as sure as day follows night...I will wail in anguished lamentations as they again...fail miserably. False hopes by All Star game...to be followed by a painful bounce to the cellar.
They're killin me....killin me I tells ya.
