Mark Rudd remembers

Mark Rudd was the colleague of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in the Weather Underground. He is also the author of a memoir that is out today. Ronald Radosh reviews Rudd's memoir Underground in the New York Post.

Radosh credits Rudd with remembering a few items that Ayers and his friends seek to airbrush from the record, including the purpose of their terrorism. Radosh points out, for example:

Radosh also points out that Rudd still believes the United States is evil, and that he and his comrades spent years working "to continue the idealism inherent in our rebellion."

Being an idealist excuses nothing.

Hitler was an "idealist". He was also a socialist, a vegetarian, a teatotaller, an antichristian who espoused a preverse, self-serving form of Christianity, a non-smoker, a drug abuser, a hypochondriac, childishly sentimental, a dilettante and a sexual deviant. He was enthralled by a superficial and superstitious naturalism. If he were alive today and living in Chicago, he’d be a Professor of Education and Community Organizer.

I want you to imagine sitting in a room with 25 people, most of which have graduate degrees, from Columbia and other well-known educational centers, and hear them figuring out the logistics for the elimination of 25 million people. Seems as if Rudd may have written his book to answer the folks who have been curious about where he has been all these years. If Ayers could come out of the closet last year after seemingly disappearing from public consciousness for decades, Rudd must have been jealous of him and thought he could do likewise. These radicals love the limelight, since it makes them look relevant.

Rudd appears in the documentary Weather Underground and tells how his high school students ask him what he did when he was younger (possibly prompted by their parents?). He answers them that he was head of a group whose object was the overthrow of the United States government. It's all in the film.

I remembered his appearance in this film as showing some repentance, but now I am not so sure. Tried to buy the book on Sunday after reading Radosh's review but the bookstore didn't have it yet.

Those jokers who went underground discovered to their chagrin that no one gave a rat’s ass. Abbie Hoffman finally came back out (after his under-convincing disguise as “Barry Freed”), found out he was a big fat zero, and killed himself. I recall one of his letters from the underground (as it were) to some magazine; in regards to a book by Eldridge Cleaver, Hoffman said the author knew “more about the inside of Donald Duck’s brain than he knows about what’s going on in Cuba”.

I, for one, wouldn't want to give Rudd one cent in royalties by buying his book.

Oh, so Rudd has been a high school teacher all these intervening years?

I was wondering how the country could have moved so far to the left as to elect "Osama" Obama and this 'Rat Congress. The fact that quite a number of voters were brainwashed in school by teachers like Rudd is one of the more telling factors. Too bad that school systems have no standards to speak of when hiring those who have such a huge influence over the youngsters that they teach.

OK, spoiler coming up: Mark is still on the wrong side, but has become a pacifist now and renounces all violent solutions.

The book gives a lot of detail on the history of those days and for that was helpful for me. There were lots of things I did not know.

It's not great writing; it just does the job. Propaganda for the wrong side has to be constantly filtered out, but Mark does not exaggerate his role--it seems to be an honest book.
