Peanut Butter Recall - what to do? [Please Help - vanity post]
Maybe Silly Vanity | Just Now | Moi

Posted on 03/10/2009 5:05:31 PM PDT by Mr_Moonlight

OK, sorry for this little (possibly) silly vanity post, but about 2 months ago I purchased a package of "Austin" brand "Cheese Crackers with Peanut Butter" from a vending machine at work, just before the recall thing was starting to make headlines ... never ate them, just let 'em sit in the drawer until I could check out if they were on the recall list.

Today I checked the FDA site and sure enough these are on the list. Upon checking the FAQ at FDA, it says to 'destroy them in a manner such as that they cannot be consumed', but then doesn't go on to say HOW to destroy them in such a manner, nor does any other web search regarding this recall.

So I thought about it for a while.
Throw 'em in the trash? Ut-uh, they could then get 'consumed' by rats and/or other critters in the landfill. Flush 'em down the toilet? Nope, any salmonella present could find its way into the water table. Nuke 'em? Why would I want to mess up my nice clean microwave with nasty gooey nuked peanut butter crackers? Besides, its a vintage Litton, over 30 years old and still going strong. Pour kerosene over the package and incinerate? Well, not a bad idea, might even be fun :) ... but I don't need the local FD Marshall banging on my door with a summons.

So, my last hope is to reach out to fellow FReepers who might know a thing or two about how to properly dispose of these dreaded Peanut Butter Crackers ... surely the government FDA isn't telling.

Oh, and besides, they cost me $1 at the vending machine, and I want my damn $1 back!!! /laughs

I work in the wholesale/vend business. I destroyed literally thousands of dollars of product from the recall which Keebler is giving me credit for.

Destroy them with bleach

Why do you care about dead rats?

Yeah, but then some PETA punks would start chiming in with a bunch of noise ... this is a quiet neighborhood, and I detest noisy protests out front ...

Deciding whether to throw away a $1.00 vending machine item is an extremely serious issue.
Our American way of life could be at stake.

I recommend contacting your Senator, and seeing if you could receive some TARP funds to remove these “toxic assets” from your inventory.

If not, I would follow the recommendation of the other poster, who recommends a donation to the local ACORN office.

Or maybe the office staff at DU has the munchies?

Dogs do not get salmonella.

And I seriously doubt rats get it either. They eat dead stuff, how could they get salmonella?

Hahahahahaa ... Thanks :) Good advice all around ... I knew I could depend on fellow FReepers advice instead of the inept FDA :)

Shoot. Our dogs go out in the woods and rummage around, eating every rotting varmint they can find, dragging deer carcasses around for days, dragging dead squirrels around by the tails, then looking for the muddiest, gruddiest puddle of nasty water to wash it all down with. Those peanut butter crackers would be considered a delicacy.

Boil them, then dump the water in the dirt.

Salmonella is killed above temps of 200 deg. held for one minute or longer.

Also, remember the 40-145 rule, especially with Poultry. Keeping foods that are natural carriers, i.e. poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk, below 40 and above 145 prevents Salmonella poisoning in humans.

That’ll be $1.00, please.
