Geology Picture of the Week, March 1-7, 2009: Kangaroo Island, Australia

This happened because I was looking at a picture of Australia from space and I said to myself, "What is that island off the coast from Adelaide?"

Here's a map:

So this island is Kangaroo Island, and it has a rock formation called Remarkable Rocks. I recommend a Google image search for them: if you include the name of the national park (Flinders Chase), you'll find quite a few.

Below is one example

This is probably the most photographed one:

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Education; Science; Travel
KEYWORDS: australia; beach; park; wildlife
Here's an article about the place; it's apparently a small wilderness island with quite a bit of the indigenous wildlife:

Island paradise abounds with wildlife

A note: the header link is to Panaramio. There are some pictures there, but I couldn’t get one to post tonight for some reason. It’s worked before.

One more note: I misspelled Panoramio, but the link works. It should be http://www.panoramio.com/

To see lots of pictures, zoom into the Kangaroo Island/Adelaide area with the world map. (Click on the map in the lower righthand corner of the home page, then click on the region to zoom in). When you get Kangaroo Island centered in the map window, there will be like 1400+ pictures of the place available. Start clicking on "Next". There is one problem; if you click on a thumbnail picture to see it larger, and then go back, the list reverts to the beginning. Small "argh".

The Island was part of mainland Australia only during times of low sea level caused by global glaciation (commonly called an Ice Age). The many native plants and animals which inhabit Kangaroo Island have been isolated most recently for the past 12,000 years. Many of these are clearly different from their relatives on the nearby mainland - the Kangaroo Island kangaroo is a distinct sub-species of the western grey kangaroo, the endangered Glossy-black cockatoo is also an Island sub-species and the Sooty Dunnart (a small marsupial carnivore) is found nowhere else on earth.

My wife and I visited in 1990, and fell in love with the whole scenario. At times, I wish I lived there, but then I think of all that I would miss here. Thanks for the memories!
