Hollywood figures from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences arrive in Iran to hold filmmaking and movie marketing seminars.

"I can confirm that a group of Academy members ... are currently in Iran" on a "completely private initiative for educational and creative exchange and with no political agenda," Academy communications director Leslie Unger told AFP on Friday.

According to Unger, the top-level Hollywood delegation includes AMPAS president Sid Ganis, American screenwriter and film director Frank Pierson, actress Annette Bening and producer William Horberg.

"The Academy group did receive visas and is currently in Tehran," she confirmed.

The Hollywood team is scheduled to take part in a series of meetings in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the managing director of Iran's House of Cinema, Mohammad Mehdi Asgharpour, the participants will discuss screenwriting, directing, acting, documentary filmmaking, production, and film marketing and distribution at the meetings.

The AMPAS group will also visit Iran's Cinema Museum and attend a press conference at the House of Cinema on March 7, 2009.

In his first prime time White House news conference after taking office, US President Barack Obama envisioned better days in US relations with Iran.

Obama spoke of his enthusiasm to engage officials in Iran "sitting across the table, face to face". His call has been welcomed by the majority of officials in Tehran who seek lasting change in the US stance toward their country.

with no political agenda

Hollywood without political agenda? LOL! Who are they fooling?

Wouldn't it be a hoot if the Revolutionary Guards take them hostage for "lewd conduct" and "spreading corruption on earth"?

They wouldn’t imprison their propaganda arm. I have sympathy for the Iranian people, hollywood has sympathy for their oppressive regime.

The RCP calls for the armed overthrow of the U.S. government...

From the website of the Revolutionary Communist Party (revcom.us or rwor.org) :

"Create Public Opinion, Seize Power: We are preparing minds and organizing forces for the time when there is a major crack in the system, whenever it comes and wherever it comes from: an opening that makes it possible to bring the future Revolutionary Army of the Proletariat (R.A.P.) into the field and wage a revolutionary armed struggle that actually has a chance of winning.

And we have said that building our party itself is the most important part of organizing forces for revolution. This is true now, and it is true looking forward to the creation of that future R.A.P. and the waging of that armed struggle.":

playing the devil’s advocate, let’s not forget that antonio mendez (of c.i.a. disguise division fame) used the ploy of a canadian filmmaking crew to exfiltrate American hostages from iran in 1980.
