COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Members of the Legislative Black Caucus left the State House in protest over the plan to require voters to show photo identification to prove who they are at polling precincts.
The debate was under way Thursday on the House floor.
The measure requires voters to show a valid driver's license, passport, military ID or state identification card. It removes the current $5 fee for the cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Rep. Alan Clemmons argues it's a voter integrity issue. The Myrtle Beach Republican says federal court rulings about similar laws in other states back requiring photo ID.
Democrats contend the measure is about suppressing the vote. They say there's no need for the proposal since there are no documented cases of voter fraud in South Carolina.
"We oppose this bill because we see it as a throwback to times of people being suppressed and not given an opportunity to fully participate in the electoral process," Rep. David Weekes of Sumter County said.
"This is a backlash against Obama. We have over two million registered voters in the state of South Carolina and 1.9 million voters voted in this last election -- that's a 75 percent turnout with not one incident of reported fraud came to the Election Commission. Not one," Rep. Chris Hart of Richland County said.
Despite the walkout, the House passed the bill late Thursday afternoon.
Currently, only seven states in the United States require a photo ID to vote.

Incredible. ACORN will control the elections in 2010 and 2012. Everyone should have a photo ID at the polls and they should insure people vote once. These stinking facists.

Note that they walked out as a racial group. That’s RACIST!
You can bet that if Mexican illegals were outvoting black interests that they’d be for voter ID.
Where are the unhyphenated Americans? What will happen to this country when “white power” starts to be a salable media commodity?

I have to show some form of ID at my station here in Ohio. It always seemed like a perfectly reasonable thing to me in that it keeps everyone honest. I find it hard to believe that these people are that sensitive about past transgressions. find it far more likely that their sensitivity is false and they’re upset that a monkey wrench is being thrown into their election fraud machinery. To hell with them.

"This is a backlash against Obama." Well yes, if you want to look at it that way, Rep. Hart. Moving the Census to Rahm Emanuel's direct supervision out of Commerce is a clear signal Obama and co-conspirators like you plan to steal elections "by any means necessary."

Wow - just wow. You have to show photo ID to get a beer or a cigarette but not to vote? Which does more harm to society I wonder - an 20 year old smoking or vote fraud?

A similar story: In New Orleans the City Council is now 4-3, white-black. The council has been trying to get more transparency in the process by which the Mayor gives out contracts. It's a move for openness and good government, but the Mayor and other blacks turned it into a racial dispute.
Moral of the story: if you're not getting called racist when dealing with black political groups, it means that you've given in to corrupt, non-transparent voting and spending.

Hopefully they won’t come back. There is no need for a “Legislative Black Caucus” any more than we need a white or brown one. Removing the $5 fee leaves no excuse to NOT have a photo ID.
I guess now they will argue that they need transportation to get to the DMV to get the ID.
