San Francisco man faces fallout from `Wife Swap'

SAN FRANCISCO – It's safe to say Stephen Fowler probably wishes he never appeared on "Wife Swap."

Fowler's stint on the ABC reality show last month, in which he called a rural Missouri woman spending two weeks in his San Francisco home stupid and simple, has made him famous in the worst way.

His performance has inspired a Web site, StephenFowlerSucks.com, a Facebook group, "I Can not Stand Stephen Fowler from `Wife Swap,'" and public condemnation by his own wife, who on her blog urged him to get professional help.

What has generated such wrath is Fowler's condescending treatment...

Fowler, an environmental entrepreneur who develops biofuels, apologized in a statement posted on his wife's blog for behaving "like a complete jerk" and said he has resigned from the boards of two nonprofit corporations for reflecting badly on the organizations.

Nonprofit = parasite.

Tell him to clean up the urine-laden streets of San Fran first.

Cheers!

Yawn.

Big deal. I’m a *redneck* who develops biofuels.

I have a new batch coming on line right now — several MCF of unnatural gas. Had Mexican food last night, you see.

Folks, this is a reality show. Which means it is heavily scripted, rehearsed, and the “ordinary people and situations” are contrived to gin up ratings. I’m certainly not defending this snotty Brit, but in the article it does state he was told to ham it up for the cameras.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the producers of tripe like this. Then blame yourself for watching it.

The gist of his apology: “I’m sorry you all had a chance to see me as I really am-and I’m even sorrier that my actions had unforseen consequences”

Maybe he can try again- go back to Merry Old England and move in with the wife of a Yemeni suicide bomber, or a Jamaican gang member-you know the kind of people culturally enriching his own country.

Fowler makes as much in a week as the Longs do in a year by “developing biofuels”. In other words, Fowler makes a very good living figuring out ways to scam the government out of subsidy money. Meanwhile, the rural family, which one might suppose would be the intended beneficiary of the subsidy, struggles along.

This is how it is with all well-intended government programs. They are supposed to help folks like the Longs, but the wind up sending Millions of dollars to jerks like Fowler, who do nothing all day but figure out how to game the system.

Absolutely agree. In a 75 year lifespan there are ~657,000 hours, total. Most of us who are working have at best 3-6 hours a day that aren't spoken for by required activities (at best). Why in the world would you use that time to watch reality show ‘tripe’, as you put it. (yes, I know I am using some of that precious time on freerepublic, but at least it's informative and can be productive).

“He” said he was told to ham it up. If that was acting he would have a dozen Oscars. You can’t act that well. He was for real. We saw the show and he was the most disgusting, foul, snobbish foreigner there ever was. Mr. G commented at the time that people might physically attack him. The guy was/is a appalling. How the wife puts up with him is beyond me. She runs a weight loss counseling business and all the husband did was put down the other wife for being over weight. I wouldn’t surprise me if his comments cause the business to go under. Words can not describe the disgust I feel for that slime.

The real slime are the people who even came up with the idea for this show, and the network execs that thought it would be a good idea.

Does anyone remember the reality show that sought to recreate colonial America? A group of people built a community on the east coast and followed an idea of what it would have been like in the early 1600s.

The man who was elected religous leader was a liberal religion professor from San Francisco. The man who was elected mayor was a conservative Baptist preacher from Texas. The liberal man admitted that he was predisposed to not like the mayor because of his politics in real life. Then ironically the liberal was pretty nasty to a man who came out as gay, when one would have thought he would have been more supportive. More hypocrisy.

I don't watch this show, but here are highlights.

Part One (5 minutes) He constantly berates the woman, knocks the US, completely mocks the midwest, and uses his paycheck as an excuse to for his behavior.

Part 2 He cuts down the military, mocks the wife further (calling her "obese" "under educated" "low class" "unintelligent"), and flips the husband and wife the bird.

This guy is a HUGE dumbass, but his wife is no prize either.

The notoriety will not hurt him one bit in the long run. He’ll go on Oprah, Ellen, the View, etc. Then he will write a book, do a few game shows, and then he and his wife will have their own reality show. He will make a fortune. Hey, it works for Gordon Ramsey, Simon Cowell, and those poncey fashion critics on innummerable cable shows.

The comments at Ihatestephenfowler.com are great! I'm wondering what their freeper screen names are.

Another liberal trasplant showing his true colors. This city is full of the same type of jerks as this guy, I don't need to watch TV to see it I just have to walk outside my front door. Most of the whiny, self-rightous snobs who make up the "liberal elite" of this city are not native San Franciscans. Not that I have anything against people who relocate - my best friend is originally from Philly - but the majority of people I meet who move here are cut from the same cloth and I wouldn't use that cloth to wipe my butt.

So this guy behaves like a complete boor and horse's ass on TV and the Chronicle doesn't report it for two weeks. And then, when it does report it, the Chronicle....you guessed it....defends the guy. Just hamming up, that's all. Nothing to see here...move along. To me, this guy represents what I call the "Entitlement Class". He is a limey, over here in the U.S. living of the fat of the land, and benefitting from the U.S. government (more on that in a moment). Yet, he has the arrogance to criticize the very country and system that are making him enormously wealthy. Being a venture capitalist, most of his income is in the form of carried interest, i.e. a share of the investment gains from the companies his VC firm invests in. Amazingly, these gains are taxed at capital gains rates, not ordinary income rates. So, while the rest of us poor bastards have to pay 35% taxes on our income, this guy is paying something like 15%. If that's not a handout, I don't know what is.

I watched all of the segments of this take on early colonial life.

Thought it was a hoot! — didn’t come off very well — especially the end, when they all went shopping for the first time in a drug store.

What wimps!

It's perfect medicine for America, IMO. Puts peoples own values systems on display for them to see from an outside point of view.

Much better than idealized 50's TV that painted an unrealistic and unattainable picture of family life and parenting to kids. Just setting them up to reject their parents who can't live up to unrealistic standards.

The vast majority of non-profit organizations are "in business" to beat the tax man. If a few dollars get spent on "wonderful things" that is a side benefit, not the objective.

Blue Cross/Shield are non-profits, set up to take advantage of tax laws.

Most non-profits {other than religious ones} use about 30-35% for the "cause" with the majority going for administrative expenses and other "wonderful things".

We have become a nation of voyeurs who enjoy peeking through the window at the lives of others.

What a waste of good time.

Why watch someone make a jerk out of themselves when you can go outside and make a jerk of yourself, film it and send it in to “America’s Funniest Videos?”

Seriously folks, how many FReepers have read or are reading The Federalist Papers? http://www.americanaphonic.com And when was the last time you read The Constitution & Bill o’ Rights?

re: Stupid show never should have been on in the first place

Can’t you just see them all gathered around a table during a brain storming session to come up with an idea for a new show? Someone says let’s go with one that has husbands and wives swapping out for a time! The producer responds, “What could possibly go wrong?”

The rest is history.
