In most restaurants in Shanghai, China (where I am at present) waitresses wear very attractive skirt and blouse combos. They are western-style combos, hem below the knee.

My wife and I were having a quite late dinner, and my wife commented on the outfits to one of the older (female) managers. We were surprised by the reply (the conversation, in Mandarin, was long, but I’ll try to give it here succinctly):

The restaurants of that type (”business class”) had gone back and forth between skirt outfits and and pant suits for waitresses.

1. The female waitresses tend to be more careful about everything when they are wearing a skirt; everything from handling dishes to their manners.

2. There seems to be a more professional decorum when the girls wear skirts.

3. The customers (male and female) tend to treat the girls better when they are wearing the attractive skirt-blouse combo, and this produces a more cheery work environment, so things tend to go better all around.

Now that is what a female shift manager told us, at a restaurant where an 8 ounce cup of coffee will cost more than $4.00 (USD), and an Italian style pasta dish will cost you $11.00 (USD) with almost nothing on the side.

I believe it looked terrible when Condolesa Rice did her official business in pant suits, and I think the same about Hillary Clinton’s outfit. I believe it looks much worse than the president having his suit coat off at his desk in the Oval Office.
