The associated press is discussing the first black RNC Chairman.
"The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday, just shy of three months after the nation elected a Democrat as the first African-American president."
Steele is black, Obama is Africa-American.
The thing about this is that the media refers to all black people as African-American instead of black because calling them black is considered insulting by the people who change the rules every few weeks. Am I reading too much into this, or is this done as an insult?
weird how that is, don’t you think? I wonder why? Is it race, or is it party...
Democrats, the party of the KKK since 1870 ....
I recall clearly the effort made by the Black community to coach us all into calling them “Black” rather than “Negroes.”
We all thought about it, and complied. It seemed the gentlemanly thing to do.
When asked subsequently to change the language to “African American,” the only thing that comes to mind is that their community has so soiled their chosen word “Black,” that they need a new name.
I refuse. I’ll be a good sport and change terminology once per lifetime. If you can’t keep your good name, don’t ask me twice.
Steele is an American which is more than we can say about the idiot in the whitehouse.
No moss grows on you TNP....if it’s coming from the MSM, it’s designed to demean the conservative. We should refer to him as Chairman Steele, the first African-American leader of the RNC.
There is an old writing rule to avoid using the exact same adjective too many times in a short space.
For the record, I am the adoptive father of two African-American black children. I use both terms. Their race is black, as mine is white. Their ethnicity is African-American as mine is 4 varieties of European mixed in-American.
Both have their uses.
I never received my secret decoder ring so I can’t help you.
Anyone outside my family, AKA us, is referred to as them, regardless of race, color or creed.
Well....Obama is not a full African American. He’s a Mulatto. Half Anglo American and half African (African not African American.)
DING!!!DING!!!DING!!!
“Steele is an American which is more than we can say about the idiot in the whitehouse.”
Right on!
Do you have a link to the AP news feed? I’m skeptical; there’s been a lot of ODS and satire being posted here recently. We’re FReepers, not DUmmies.
I have been corrected a few times by blacks when I use the term african-American....they wanted be called black because they were not from Africa but were Americans.....
If you were born in America I would call you American.
I might buy that they were following this rule if it weren’t for the fact that they use the term black twice about Steele in the same article.
Actually, he is referred to as black 4 times. Once in the title, twice in the article, and then the caption of the picture on the left. The only use of African American is for Obama.
See, if I call you a “honky”, then I’m insulting you.
But if I call you a “honka” then that means we’re buddies.
In my first IT job, in banking, one of the investment officers had fled South Afrika (she was an Afrikaner, i.e. Caucasian).
We used to joke that she was the only authentic African-American in the division...
okay. Now suppose he's a tourist from France.
btw, do you have a link to the article?
That said, this is so outrageous, so blatant. Not that any of that surprises me. I wonder what the AP style manual has to say about the use of the words black and African American when writing about a person's race.
IIRC the LA Times Style Manual some years back took us to a new level of PC by saying that the word alien should be reserved for stories about visitors from another planet.
duh! nevermind. just saw it.
See post 16. I asked the same question and the OP was quick to reply.
Obama is an Arab-American by blood and birth NOT an African American and does not even have the 12% African bloodline to merit the Federal standard of being an African ethnicity minority.
[This has been posted and verified in hundreds of COLB threads]
Obama is also HALF WHITE, so....
Why are we called racists if we dislike Obama?
When blacks disliked President Bush, were they called racists?
Why aren’t blacks who dislike Obama called racists, he is half white!
Blacks that I know call themselves and each other Black, they only use the term “African American” when they are have some agenda like wanting to shame White people into agreeing with them or conceding something to them. So I call them Black, and I don’t get much negative reaction to it. If they insist I call them “African American”, I instead say that I will call them simply “American” as long as they agree to do they same for me and people of my skin tone, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go.
Yeah, I don’t really get how Obama is an “African American” at all. Obama is half-American and half-African, but has not one drop of so-called “African American” blood in him as far as I can tell.
“Why are we called racists if we dislike Obama?”
***
Race pre-empts substantive discussion.
Voting based on race is PC as long as you vote for the BLACK guy.
That's rockin'.
This is just my humble opinion. African-Americans are so called because when their ancestors were brought over from Africa in chains in slavery, that most abominable stain on humanity, there were no countries, hence the term “African-American.” But with the madrassa-educated apostate moslem, there is a distinct nationality. My family are Irish-Americans. That’s where our European roots are (with some French thrown in). Why, then, isn’t The Dear Leader known as a “Kenyan-American?” Kenya, whence his father came, has been a sovreign nation since about 1961.
So Doc, did your children imigrate from Africa? Are you an imigrant from four different Euopean countries? Or, are you all American born or naturalized Americans? If you are the later, why don’t you all just be Americans?
I know, I was asking in a half - facious, half - sarcastic way. I think what I wrote is common sense but the libs have a lack of that.
The last time you replied to me about Michelle's dress, you told me to 'stuff it'!
Well...he’s an American Mulatto.
We used to joke that she was the only authentic African-American in the division...
I dated a girl in college who was blonde hair and blue eyes, born in Johannesburg and raised in Texas. She would select African-American on any form she filled out.
I don’t like that one because it implies that HE’s American, which I am reserving judgement on at the moment!
I dont hold grudges (except against libtards).
All i remember about her dresses is that they were fugly.
Water under the virtual bridge, as far as I’m concerned.
P.S. You evidently didnt take my advice, LOL!
International Mulatto?
How about “Barack the Magic Negro”, that has a nice ring to it, and it must be PC since it comes from the LA Times!
No, I don’t hold grudges either, just have a darned good memory for stuff, lol. Sometimes wish I didn’t! Only dislike things if they aren’t fair and everyone has an opinion.
I mostly post graphics and they don’t get me in trouble!!
I use the term, "those people."
I have a very good memory for dialogue, as the result of stting through many trials and depositions for over 20 years.
But internet posts, not so much.
No ‘fact check’ on opinion though..
Speaking of memory and grudges, I once knew a very funny lawyer of Jewish descent who was ready to retire, and he told me he had Jewish Alzheimer’s disease- he forgot everything except the grudges.
*LOL*
[Jewish Alzheimers disease- he forgot everything except the grudges]
That would be a sad state of mind to be in, lol.
“The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday, just shy of three months after the nation elected a Democrat as the first African-American president.”
Take advantage and push it to the limit.
None of Obama’s black ancestors were slaves in the American South. None of them lived under Jim Crow. None marched in the Civil rights movement. They were in Africa.
He’s truly more an African American than a black American of African descent because his heritage lies closer to the “old country”.
He came in as a first generation type who stood on the shoulders of all those who were here before.
Use that as a wedge...but carefully.
.
Bumperoo
Both are Negros...
If Obama wishes to state he was born in Africa, then perhaps he may claim to be African American....
The ONLY African-Americans I personally know who were born in Africa and later become American citizens, are WHITE.
The term African American doesn’t necessarily denote a black person, but Negro does and is the correct terminology...
I’m sick and tired of all this talk about race.
Why is everybody congratulating themselves because the RNC got a BLACK chairman - as if somehow he must be wonderful.
Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t, but his color is irrelevant.
It’s as if we need to prove to ourselves that we’re not racist?
.
Tedious after a few minutes
As my great grandmother was an Injun
I just say I have a dash of redskin, hold the apostrophe
