You know how we aren't allowed to call black people black
Doug Ragan

Posted on 01/30/2009 5:33:41 PM PST by TheNewPundit

The associated press is discussing the first black RNC Chairman.

"The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday, just shy of three months after the nation elected a Democrat as the first African-American president."

Steele is black, Obama is Africa-American.

The thing about this is that the media refers to all black people as African-American instead of black because calling them black is considered insulting by the people who change the rules every few weeks. Am I reading too much into this, or is this done as an insult?

I recall clearly the effort made by the Black community to coach us all into calling them “Black” rather than “Negroes.”

We all thought about it, and complied. It seemed the gentlemanly thing to do.

When asked subsequently to change the language to “African American,” the only thing that comes to mind is that their community has so soiled their chosen word “Black,” that they need a new name.

I refuse. I’ll be a good sport and change terminology once per lifetime. If you can’t keep your good name, don’t ask me twice.

No moss grows on you TNP....if it’s coming from the MSM, it’s designed to demean the conservative. We should refer to him as Chairman Steele, the first African-American leader of the RNC.

There is an old writing rule to avoid using the exact same adjective too many times in a short space.

For the record, I am the adoptive father of two African-American black children. I use both terms. Their race is black, as mine is white. Their ethnicity is African-American as mine is 4 varieties of European mixed in-American.

Both have their uses.

I might buy that they were following this rule if it weren’t for the fact that they use the term black twice about Steele in the same article.

I've asked people a simple question: a black man crossing 5th Ave from St. Patrick's Cathedral to Rockerfeller Center gets hit by a car and a reporter witnesses it. What should appear in the headline? "Black" or "African-American"?

okay. Now suppose he's a tourist from France.

Thank you. I would humbly suggest when posting a story like this that you paste the link to the original story in the "Source URL" field and check the "This is an excerpt" checkbox.

That said, this is so outrageous, so blatant. Not that any of that surprises me. I wonder what the AP style manual has to say about the use of the words black and African American when writing about a person's race.

IIRC the LA Times Style Manual some years back took us to a new level of PC by saying that the word alien should be reserved for stories about visitors from another planet.

Obama is an Arab-American by blood and birth NOT an African American and does not even have the 12% African bloodline to merit the Federal standard of being an African ethnicity minority.

[This has been posted and verified in hundreds of COLB threads]

Obama is also HALF WHITE, so....

Why are we called racists if we dislike Obama?
When blacks disliked President Bush, were they called racists?
Why aren’t blacks who dislike Obama called racists, he is half white!

Blacks that I know call themselves and each other Black, they only use the term “African American” when they are have some agenda like wanting to shame White people into agreeing with them or conceding something to them. So I call them Black, and I don’t get much negative reaction to it. If they insist I call them “African American”, I instead say that I will call them simply “American” as long as they agree to do they same for me and people of my skin tone, but that’s as far as I’m willing to go.

This is just my humble opinion. African-Americans are so called because when their ancestors were brought over from Africa in chains in slavery, that most abominable stain on humanity, there were no countries, hence the term “African-American.” But with the madrassa-educated apostate moslem, there is a distinct nationality. My family are Irish-Americans. That’s where our European roots are (with some French thrown in). Why, then, isn’t The Dear Leader known as a “Kenyan-American?” Kenya, whence his father came, has been a sovreign nation since about 1961.

“The Republican Party chose the first black national chairman in its history Friday, just shy of three months after the nation elected a Democrat as the first African-American president.”

Take advantage and push it to the limit.

None of Obama’s black ancestors were slaves in the American South. None of them lived under Jim Crow. None marched in the Civil rights movement. They were in Africa.

He’s truly more an African American than a black American of African descent because his heritage lies closer to the “old country”.

He came in as a first generation type who stood on the shoulders of all those who were here before.

Use that as a wedge...but carefully.

Both are Negros...

If Obama wishes to state he was born in Africa, then perhaps he may claim to be African American....

The ONLY African-Americans I personally know who were born in Africa and later become American citizens, are WHITE.

The term African American doesn’t necessarily denote a black person, but Negro does and is the correct terminology...

Why is everybody congratulating themselves because the RNC got a BLACK chairman - as if somehow he must be wonderful.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t, but his color is irrelevant.

It’s as if we need to prove to ourselves that we’re not racist?
