You’re quite right about the drug use. Didn’t mean to give it a pass. What’s the gang epidemic all about after all? Which came first the chicken or the egg? Lawlessness where sexual mores are concerned led to the disintegrating black family, a perfect storm facilitating drugs & gangs.

Twentieth century African Americans did not invent gangs. Gangs are as old as humanity. George Gilder has pointed out that male humans, when not kept home by the power of a woman, will have a strong temptation to join warrior societies.

In some cultures, such as Europe and Japan in the middle ages, those warrior societies took political power and became the ruling classes. Now, there’s a comforting thought, looking out at our modern urban landscape.

In many parts of modern western societies, women have given up the power that they used to have, in the name of equality, and sexual liberation, and the result is a more violent society.

I agree that gangs are not unique to blacks. I do believe that what we’re witnessing today is directly related to the family breakdown, which is hand in glove with the 1960s demands for permissive sexual freedoms, etc: the new morality. This is not to say that the problem would be solved simply with intact families. But approximately 90% of black children born to single mothers. Its getting to be an understatement to call this “family breakdown”, gangs are a manifestation of something just as deep taking place. Sadly gangs may already be replacing the authority of the family, I think its a matter of scale & scope now when we talk about this issue in the current setting. (Especially if you throw in the role of youth culture too in the mix.) And going back to the fact that we were calling it the “new morality” in the 1960s,we’re only reaping what we sowed.
