Bear attack on Uncompahgre Plateau ( Colorado ) kills dog
KJCT ^ | Aug 27, 2008 | SARA GOLDENBERG

One family had an unwelcome guest visit them on their camping trip Wednesday.

The Division of Wildlife says campers reported a black bear came into their camp site and carried their dog away in its mouth.

It happened on the Uncompahgre Plateau in the Big Creek Reservoir Area near Divide Road. No one in the family was hurt-- but their dog wasn't so lucky.

If you come across a bear or mountain lion the first thing you want to do is make yourself look as large as possible. Making noise and throwing things can also help-- just don't bend down.

"Bottom line, if you're attacked by any animal in Colorado, fight back. Don't play dead, don't run away, you want to fight back."

Ive heard that hanging cloth bags of moth balls around your camp will help keep animals away. They hate the smell.

IMO : moth balls work as well as little brass bells against a predatory bear.

or even deer.

Don't know if moth balls would survive the trip through. :)

What is it with all these bear attacks lately? We have had two fatalities, and one non deadly mauling, from black bears up here in my area in recent years.

I think it is several factors we have discussed.

Just a matter of time before New Jersey has a fatality from a black bear.

No joke, 40-50 people mauled bad every season up here; always been that way. Shooting bears on sight is openly accepted in Alaska, kinda just normal way it;s done.

I’ve had 2 blk bears come in on me over the years and they were thinking food as in me.

With dogs, usually 3 is magic number. Under 3, bear figures he handle them. Barking dogs spook bear if enough of them.

Quite common to have bears eating dogs on chains actually. Has happened several times over last few years here in our community.

That advice may be acccepted by pussies but it won’t fly in my camp.

Right, pick them off as they come over the berm.

“pick them off as they come over the berm.”

Sound advice.
