Whether I want them to have that status or not, we search them, confine them, and treat them with that status.
That permits us to detain them until the war is over.
I would like them to earn that status by doing the little things like wearing a uniform, avoiding damage to non-combatants, and treating prisoners correctly. That they don’t is to the shame of the Muslims. Still, we hold them, and provide decent care.
After Hiroshima and Nagazaki, Japanese treatment of US POW improved. The web site I linked was regarding Japanese compensation to US persons held.
In addition to the humanitarian angle, I think the theory is that some of them will provide useful intelligence. They’ve been brainwashed about how vile Westerners are, and can be thoroughly disoriented just by receiving our standard medical care (some of it from women, who most certainly won’t be wearing burkas), which they know full well they’d never have gotten in the hands of their own people.
After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese began with a large number of non-POW detainees. The US had a smaller number of Non-POW detainees.
