Google Street View(Vanity)
July 22,2008 | me

Posted on 07/22/2008 8:20:02 AM PDT by aft_lizard

Ugggh I am livid. I just found out Google did a street view of my neighborhood, not only that they got me outside in the picture. They should be required by law to give forewarning that they are taking pictures in your neighborhood.

There is no law against photographing publicly visible locales.

They’ve been blurring out faces. I’m not sure if that’s automatically, in-time, or by request.

This I know, that is why I said I would have appreciated a little forewarning rather than “I am going to sue them!”. Either way it is rude. What If it had been at a time when I had a pile of junk in front my house for bulk trash pick up or during one of numerous improvement projects here lately at the homestead? I would be embarrassed at the world seeing a a normally nice looking house rather than a trashed up driveway.

About a month ago I stumbled across the fact that even our little city has been "Street Viewed"....I actually love it.

I can see why you're sore about maybe having your home looking less-than-it's-best as the shot was taken, but you'd probably be the only one Googlezing your address anyhow.

It's a fun way to kill a half hour "walking" up your street and around the corner...

Yup. That’s what we need. More laws.

There aren’t enough meaningless, unenforceable laws on the books as it is, so why not a few more?

You are out in public when the picture was snapped. I don;t see that you have any privacy interest when you stand in public view.

Here is what they had to say:

To request removal of your image from Street View, you must demonstrate that you are the person shown in the panorama you would like removed. We will not take action if you are reporting on behalf of someone else (such as a friend, relative or stranger), except that you may report on behalf of your minor child. To show that you are the person in the image you would like removed, you must provide us with the information specified below. To expedite our ability to process your request, please use the following format on your verification form:

Provide your legal name.
Provide your e-mail address.
Provide the street view address of the Street View image you would like removed.
Include the sworn statement: “I declare, under penalty of perjury, that the information in this notification is accurate.”
Attach a clear, readable copy of a valid photo ID (e.g. driver’s license, national ID card, etc). If you are requesting removal of an image of a location, attach a copy of a document demonstrating your association with that location ( e.g. business card or letterhead).
Please e-mail your completed verification form, along with the necessary attachment, to maps-legal@google.com within 5 days. If you are unable to upload a copy of your photo ID electronically in an e-mail, you may also fax us a copy of your form and photo ID to (650) 887-0389.
We will temporarily remove the Street View image pending receipt of your ID verification. If we have not received a copy of your photo ID within 5 days, then we will restore the panorama back to Street View. Please note that we will investigate your complaint and take action as needed. We will not contact you unless we need more information to review your request. If you see that the panorama was not removed from Street View, it is likely that it did not meet our conditions for permanent removal.

Regards,

The Google Team

Did I mention privacy interest? I said I would like a law requiring them to warn me of there impending pictures of me, and I am dead certain most people would prefer warning before some company comes out and takes a shot of your house and then posts it so the entire world can see.

Would I mind? Probably not. Taking pictures in public, from public property, or things viewable from said public property is perfectly legal.

In fact, if your county property tax and property records information is available online, there is a very strong chance the government has already posted pictures of your home online.

Yes google has done this for quite awhile. What’s bad is your local tax assessor may have pics of your home including your cars (license plate numbers) freely available to anyone that knows your address or name (easy to view online). Not to mention some even list your loan information. That feels like a total invasion of privacy.

Nonsense.

Say you are on vacation in NYC and a company is taking photos of street scenes. Should they have to notify the entire population of NYC, and any persons who may possibly be in NYC that day that their 'privacy' may be affected by possibly ending up in one of the photographs?

Come on.

Serious question. Have you taken any vacation photos that show someones place of residence in the back ground, or persons other than your family in the background and posted them online anywhere?

Did you give those people advance warning you would be taking pictures that might include their home or them personally?

_____

Go for it. Do you like dogs?

Didn’t suggest that you should not investigate the purpose of the photographs, simply suggested that additional laws might not be called for.

More reacting to the oddity of a freeper calling for additional laws to be placed on the books over something fairly trivial (JMO). Not an everyday happening.

They should be required by law to give forewarning that they are taking pictures in your neighborhood.

If they are taking images from a public street, I believe that is fair use. However, I also believe Google gives notice in newspaper whenever their camera cars will begin working a city. I had a friend who did this for them in Phoenix and they had a news release on it.

My neighbor got his brand new Dodge Challenger in yesterday and I snapped a pic of it from my camera phone in his driveway, I guess I shouldn't put it online. :->

Unfortunately, in this case, I don't think you have any recourse other than to file a complaint with Google to remove that image and hope they comply. I had a similar but worse situation a few years ago, where the builder of my log home took pictures of my completed home without my permission and was using them as a display in his office.

There were other security factors involved as well, as he was giving out our address and we had people driving by our house to see it. We live in a rural area of the Texas hill country on a long dead end street so it was pretty obvious what they were doing and we stopped one person who confirmed it, they even knew our last name. Also, my husband was the star witness in a murder trial 20 years ago and the guy comes up for parole every few years and has threatened to kill my husband for testifying against him, so we are under a sort of witness protection where we are kept notified about his status and have input into his parole hearings. Therefore the builder was not only putting our property, but our lives at risk.

I was told that since the builder was using it for financial gain, I could have sued him. However, I just had the lawyer send him a threatening letter and it seems to have solved the problem.

Best of luck to you, hope they will remove the image for you.

I'd be aggravated too. I hate the aerial and birds eye views as well. I live in a rural area because I like some privacy. The front of my house and yard where people can just drive by and look is fair game I suppose, but the back of my property is only visible to the two farmers who tend the fields on either side of me - not the public at large. And even those farmers can't see everything on my property. Private property right? Folks can't just walk back there and start snapping pictures - why should google and other similar companies be allowed?

I was walking around my neighborhood one day and saw a beautiful cloud formation floating above the mountains.

A guy walked out of his front door and started yelling at me that I don’t have any right to take pictures of his house.

I ignored him and kept shooting the clouds and mountains combination.

He started walking up to us and yelling to stop taking photos. I told him it was a public street and I have every right in the world to take them, and continued taking them.

Sorry, but its a public place.

Ed

Lou Pinella got caught coming out of abar across the street from Wrigley Field, or maybe the Cubs are just too cheap to provide him with a space, and he has to park on the street.

FWIW, he got his pulled.

Property records are public information, but I think if one wants to look at them, they should have to go to the county clerks office to see it, not boot up a computer.
