Workers are installing 1,600 solar panels on the roof of the four-story Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center in hopes of cutting the Loma Linda hospital's electricity bill by at least $60,000 a year.

Two Million bucks for the Solar Panel System which produces 2% apparently of their annual usage. Seems high cost to me, but says it “will pay for itself” in 21 years, and “should” work for 10 more years beyond that.

I often thank God and the wonderful Doctors at this Hospital for restoring my eyesight a number of years ago when I was in my fifties.

A huge and utter waste of money.
Any investment with an ROI of 2% is a bad investment.

“, but says it “will pay for itself” in 21 years, and “should” work for 10 more years beyond that.”

Hype. It will cost much more than that in maintenance alone in the meantime. Not to mention the hidden subsidies that hide more of the cost.

Glad to hear that your eyesight was saved by the excellent doctors.

Well, with rising energy costs, many individual businesses and homeowners may decide to go to alternatives such as solar. I hope it pays off for them. With the future being muddled about the future costs, they may well break even sooner than they think.

2 mil for the panels to save 60000.00 a year that works out to 33.333 years by my calculations to break even. what kind of math is he using to figure 21 years?

Wanna cut costs? Do something about frivolous malpractice suits. I’ll bet just one bogus claim could cost more thatn $60K.

I notice that there is no mention of two things.

The total cost including "subsidies" and grants.

The cost of maintenance, or the reduction in efficiency if labor-intensive constant cleanup is not part of the program.

Both fatal flaws in the "savings" argument.

“Waste of Money”, “Fatal flaws in the savings argument”

“The system is part of a Veterans Affairs-wide push to use renewable energy under an order signed by President Bush in January 2007.”

IOW you will do it, or else.

Like I said “...Seems high cost to me...”

It’s Government spending money from the people for the politics of make nice with the Radicals of the Left once again.
