Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman but after surgery and hormone treatment lives as a man, has given birth to a girl at an Oregon hospital, People magazine reported on Thursday.
Beatie, 34, who kept female reproductive organs after initiating a transgender transformation and legally changing his name from Tracy Lagondino in his 20s, confirmed the birth to the magazine.
The baby, conceived through artificial insemination using donor sperm and Beatie's own eggs, was born on June 29, and Beatie and the baby are "healthy and doing well," People reported.
Beatie's wife, Nancy, 46, whom he married five years ago, was unable to conceive because of a prior hysterectomy. Otherwise, he has said, "I wouldn't be doing this." His spouse has two grown daughters by a previous marriage.

So why did this man feel a need so desperate to have a baby that he spent the thousands of dollars required (his or the states) to have artificial insemination?
If he so wanted to be a man, why did he not complete his gender reassignment?
The article says that Oregon legally recognizes him as a man. What basis does Oregon use in determining Sex? This man has functioning female organs.

Somehow the birth of this baby seems to me to be evidence of the failure of the “gender reassignment.” SHE is still a woman.

She obviously has severe psychological and emotional problems. Not just because she felt the need to be surgically modified to look like a man, but because she felt the need to then get pregnant so she could continually issue press releases and have press conferences to tell the world that she was a man having a baby. We are talking about a pathological need for attention.
I feel very sorry for the child, who had no choice in her parents and will likely grow up as screwed up as her mother.

Apparently the person in question also has male reproductive organs... so instead of becoming a man, or staying a woman, they are now technically a hermaphrodite - in other words, both a man and a woman if you go by the presence of reproductive organs. My best guess is that the female reproductive organs were kept due to the partner’s infertility, but I can’t imagine what the necessary amount of male hormones would do to a female fetus during pregnancy. Or, maybe this person didn’t really want to be a man, but a hermaphrodite?
Honestly, people these days are so messed up, I can’t even begin to figure this one out.

I agree that a woman having a baby conceived by artificial insemination is a non-story.
As you may have gathered by my post to me the story is that he/she has garnered the documents from state and federal governments with minimal surgical modifications to her person to document her as a man.
If she can bear children I do not understand how she can be legally documented to have completed gender reassignment.
By the way I am of the opinion that gender can not be reassigned (not at this point of history anyway).

First off surgeons can not give you male reproductive organs, not functioning ones (at least I have not heard of any testicular transplants to date).
The article states that she halted hormone treatments to resume her ovulation cycle. This makes it clear that she does not have testis.
That article also states that the birth was not cesarean she there for could not have yet had a penis constructed.

I remember reading least year that a man (maybe a woman) had plastic surgery to make him look like a cat right down to having teeth implants.
I do not believe he tried to have any official documents to make him a tabby though.

A full sex change operation involves removing the existing reproductive organs and attaching something that looks like reproductive organs of the opposite sex, but that are incapable of reproduction. After the operation, the patient is still the same sex as it was going in (based upon the presence or absence of a Y chromosome), but has been neutered and altered to look like the opposite sex.
Simply stated, they can create fixtures but cannot hook up the plumbing to make them work.
In this case, the patient only had half of the operation. She had the fake male sex organs attached and her appearance surgically altered to look male, but did not have her female sex organs removed (i.e., she wasn't neutered).
The child's only hope is that after mom stops getting national attention, she will lose interest and put the baby up for adoption.

Or the only other hope for the baby is that she hates her parents’ messed up life and rebels by becoming a completely normal, happy, functional member of society. I actually had a friend who did something like that... when she was a young teenager, her mom started going through some weird goth/japanese phase, so she refused to get into any of that stuff, and she’s turned out totally normal (and her mom is still acting like she’s a 14-year-old emo/goth kid).
