Favre has 'itch' to ditch retirement, report to camp

With his family "tugging" on him to play, Brett Favre has an "itch" to come out of retirement and report to training camp with the Green Bay Packers later this month, according to sources close to the team and player.

Favre has communicated his potential desire to coach Mike McCarthy but talks have not advanced to a substantive stage, a Packers source said. The source said the Packers would be reluctant to open the door for Favre because "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him ."

He’s good for the game. Hope he decided to unretire. I’m sure the backup QB on the packers would not be happy though.

Bad idea, Brett. Bad, bad, BAD idea. I’m a big fan, but please, stay retired. Nothing good can come of you coming back.

He was one of my favorites but I think he picked a good time to go. There is nothing worse than watching a former superstar become a shadow of his former self.

MJ is a good example. He wasn’t bad with the Wizards (infact he was better than most pros) but I still wish he’d left after that shot and that his last days in the league weren’t spent as slower and heavier guy who still played like he thought he still had the old magic. I hated watching him go out as an aging ballhog on a losing team.

Dear Brett:

The team has planned their draft, salaries, and strategy around a new starting qb. It is not fair for the Packers for you to leave and come back like that.

Doesn’t your wife like you home and in (more or less) one piece?

Dear Brett,
Stay retired. It’s over. Stop annoying your family and get a hobby or a broadcasting gig.
Sincerly,
PUR

Brett, think about what Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick did to Ali when he came out of retirement. Get a hobby. You’re the best, don’t blow the graceful exit.

“Stay retired. It’s over. Stop annoying your family and get a hobby or a broadcasting gig.”

From what the article is saying, it sounds like some in his family are urging him to come out of retirement. Would love to see him get a broadcasting gig, though.

I understand the point. But last year was on of Farve’s best in a long time. IF he can continue to play at that level, and if he thinks the team has another shot at the Superbowl, fine. If not, he should retire. MJ left B-ball for a couple of years then unretired, and he obviously lost a couple steps in the interim.

Of Course, Rocky Marciano is still the best heavyweight ever to me, because he was smart enough to step down before the decline. Unlike Ali, Holmes, Holyfield, Duran, Sugar Ray, etc etc.

Enough already!

Yup. He`s always been a classy person, so I hope he can resist the itch.

There is no problem with him saying he has the "itch" to play again. That is classic, honest Favre. Also, he was obvioulsy conflicted when he announced his retirement. As Coach Mike McCarthy predicted, he misses football.

While I was disappointed he did not decide back in March to give it one more year, I hope he stays retired. Even if he wins the Super Bowl -- a long shot -- people will harange him mercilessly every time he throws and INT or incompletion along the way. And his chances of sustaining a serious injury are only increasing.

Maybe as a Vikes fan you should hope he comes to play for the Vikes. Could be a Superbowl year with that O-line and running attack. Farve is the piece you need.

Brett,

You’re pretty good in commercials ... how about becoming some kind of movie action hero? Maybe even a franchise. Think about it.

Even tho I live in Michigan, I'm a Packer fan also. On a different level, he's my Tiger Woods of football.

Meaning that I don't watch golf if Woods isn't playing nor do I watch football unless the Packers and Favre are playing........

Would HATE to see him play for another team. He`s played for the Packers for so long, it would seem like treason if he did that.

Dear Dr. Sivana:

Thank you for your concern. Should I decided to attempt one more season with the Packers, rest assured that their draft strategies and salaries will not be affected should I choose to serve one more season. Furthermore, should my abilities surpass the existing replacement for my position then he will be able to continue to improve and prepare himself for the day when I do retire.

As for my wife, well, all I can say is that she loves me and supports me in whatever direction I choose to pursue.

Once again Doctor, thank you for your concern. Under normal circumstances, I would send you a couple of 50 yard line tickets but since you are a non-believer in my abilities then all I can offer you is the advice that you get yourself a 60" plasma with HiDef and watch our games in the comfort of your home................

Sincerely,

Your buddy Brett

“Update: Packers have no reaction to ESPN’s Favre story”

“Favre’s only response so far was a brief text message to the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun-Herald. When asked by the paper about the report, Favre said, “It’s all rumor.” When asked about a possible media firestorm, Favre said, “No reason for it.”

Favre should unretire and then head to the New England Patriots camp to become its veteran backup QB. Thank you, Mr. Favre!

Oh, I have not questioned your abilities. IT might also be tempting to think that the Giants were not a great team, but they won the SB anyway.

I will admire and respect Favre regardless, but he did give his word. I'm a Rams fan, so I won't exert to much energy worrying about it. There are plenty of Packers fans around here in northern Illinois, and they are mostly a decent bunch.

Well, there is always the economic angle, particularly for some of the boxers above I would think.

Not sure how favre has managed his money, but there are always family members happy to see one make more.
