Kill Bill was the worst movie title that has ever been thought of. I refuse to watch the flick, just on that premise alone.

I live in Jakarta, so I don't have netflix. However, I remenber one of my Korean students discussing the movie with me, and I was amazed at his enthusiasm. In fact, I bet I could tell you the whole plot from his discussion.

Yes, I, MUST see it!

Keep smiling,

Philip

Time will determine if this is a top tenner:

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

Get a load of this cynical writeup about the movie:

http://www.nj.com/movies/index.ssf?/movies/render.do?finder=njo&movieId=65187

We haven't seen it yet but we plan to. It lacks the usual foul language, nudity, liberal values and unwholesomeness that is typical of todays movies. I suppose that is why the reviewer had such disdain for it.

I'd have to add Kings Row, President Reagan's best performance, IMO (even better than his role as The Gipper). I still don't understand why he didn't get the Oscar for this film.

Yes, it is!

It's clean, not constantly dwelling on sex and making it into a joke ... I'm so weary of that trashy stuff.

Yule Brenner was great. I wish we had more decent movies. Our culture seems to be so preoccupied with sex, illicit affairs, violence and promoting trashy values. The humor is not longer amusing ... to many people live the trashy lifestyle, by choice. Perhaps this makes them feel better about themselves ... .

Yes, and no "acid to cut the sweetness". Sounds refreshing. Can't wait to see it.

BTW, if anyone gets a chance to see a movie currently running on Encore called something like "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio", don't miss it. I happened to catch it last night and was throughly entertained. It was a poinient true story set in the 1950's and early 60's about a woman who raised 10 kids and entered contests to help support her family. It was written by her daughter. A very good story, and for those of us who lived in that time period, very true to the time.

This also sounds like a movie we'd like to see. If you find out more about it, please e-mail me privately. There are very few movies out there worth seeing and this sounds like another good one!

Can you believe how biased that reviewer was? Amazing! They can't hide their contempt for people who put their head down and make the best of a situation and maintain good moral values.

The political correctness in O & H movies always bothered me, although the music is glorious. I loved “Getting to Know You” in that movie.

There aren’t that many good “K” movies I can think of. One people may not remember is one of the great low budget sci-fi’s, “Kronos”.

Not the computer one, but the one with the giant cube rampaging the countryside eating electricity. One of my favorite Chiller theatre movies.

You piqued my curiosity. I did a search on it -
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio

Excerpt:

There was a new movie starring Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson that was supposed to come out last fall called The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. It was about a 1950s housewife who raised 10 children by winning contests. I checked everywhere but it seems it was never released. What happened?
—Tom Munoz, Ridgecrest, Calif.

The movie is based on the true story of Evelyn Ryan and how she resourcefully managed to furnish her home and keep her household running with products won by writing prize-winning advertising jingles. Released in September 2005, it wasn't a big box-office draw and disappeared from theaters very quickly. It's now available on DVD

http://www.americanprofile.com/article/5310.html

It looks very good. I'm not surprised it didn't do well. Trashy movies feed the appetite of our declining culture.

Netflix has it so we will be ordering it from them.

Excerpt:

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (2005)
With 10 children to feed, postwar Ohio housewife Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) has gotten used to being resourceful, stretching her husband's meager salary to the limit. But when clipping coupons won't cut it, she's forced to rely on her creativity and enters a jingle-writing contest for extra income. Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern co-star in this uncommon comedy-drama based on a heartwarming memoir by Ryan's daughter, Terry.

Thanks for the recommendation!

King Of New York: Chris Walken leads a mess of just-starting-out known character actors (Lawrence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes, David Caruso, Steve Buscemi) through drug deals and mayhem in the Big Apple. One of Abel Ferrara’s best!

Kiss Of Death: Richard Widmark’s remarkable debut as psycho-punk, Tommy Udo. Superb Noir. Required viewing!

KIng Rat: Little known, yet superb 1950’s B&W POW film with Geoege Segal as an american NCO dealing with japanese guards for better food, clothing, etc. Outstanding supporting cast of British talent gives a hard look at their class system even in captivity. Written by James Clavell from his novel. The flip side of ‘The Great Escape’!

Jack.

Here’s a few more:

(The) Killing Of A Chinese Bookie: Uneven, though interesting character driven piece by John Cassavettes. Lots of hints of more polished techniques to come.

(The) Killing: Stanley Kubrick’s darkly toned race-track heist flick that’s full of surprises. Sterling Hayden shines
amongst a cast doing some of their best work.

(The) Killers: (1946) Heminingway penned Uber~Noir with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner. Re-made in 1964 with Lee Marvin and Clu Gullager under the helm of Don Siegel.

(The) Killer Elite: (1975) Sam Peckinpah’s adaptation of the far superior London set domestic spy novel by Robert Rostand. Shot in and around San Francisco. With James Caan as the good guy and best ex-buddy Robert Duvall as the bad guy. Features one of the most believeable one shot ‘sanctions’ with a silenced .22 Colt Woodsman on film.

Kagemusha: Excellent Akira Kurosawa 16th century feuding warlords period piece.

Jack.

Hi, krb:

I know that Ronald Reagan played an exceptional heavy in the film. One of his better roles, IMO. Along with Angie Dickinson, who can take a back handed slap with the best of any moll on film.
