PC Advertising

Posted on 06/30/2008 3:55:37 PM PDT by smithone

Has anyone else noticed this? There is an ad that has been running on TV for several months, I believe it's for a product called "Move Free". I may have that wrong but that's not my point.

The woman in the origional ad said "I feel so good, I think I'll adopt a puppy".

Later ads have changed, the same woman now says "I think I'll adopt the puppy that I always planned for".

Someone put pressure on this advertiser to change the ad. Does PETA have enough influence to affect ad terminology?

Not sure about PETA, but even vets will tell you that a spur-of-the-moment decision to get a pet is never a good idea.

Have a video link for it?

I tend to tune out commericals.

They do have that much influence.

No, sorry, I don’t, but I’ve heard it often enough to know that my report is accurate.

There might be some change in the rest of the ad that requires the extra words to get the ad back to the exact length of its time slot.

a spur-of-the-moment decision to get a pet is never a good idea.

I've done it many times. All my pets, dogs, cats and horses have led long and healthy lives.
(I had a bad experience with some hamsters that I took in, they killed each other.)

That is not the point, someone influenced the producers to change the ad, that's what bothers me.

Someone who had never had a pet should weight the decision carefully but people like me, who have had dozens and dozens and DOZENS of pets can make spur of the moment decisions. Some of the best dogs I have ever had have been strays picked up off the street.

They were probably contacted by Planned Puppyhood.

I know I’m being a smarta**, but this just reminds me of Lee Hazlewood - a song called Greyhound Bus Depot. He’s talking about the girl working behind the food counter - “Look at her, standing there with chili all over her dress...if I knew her better, I’d buy her a puppy....”

Tis true that experienced pet owners can make quicker decisions. My point was only that vet are some of the people other than PETA who might want the wording of the ad changed to prevent those who don’t have experience from making an uninformed decision. Peta may have pressured the ad buyers, but other interests may also have done so, as well, with the result being a change in the ad.

That’s a fair assement. I too thought that “I think I’ll adopt a puppy” was inappropriate but so what? I was sure that some pressure must have been put on the advertiser to change it which is what bugged me.

I probably wasted FR bandwith by posting this but it annoyed me.

I truly understand. Some things just make you HAVE to say what’s on your mind. No problem there.
