"Mamma Mia!" will pull in money, money, money

LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - No matter how many blockbusters there are, Universal's screen version of the global hit stage musical "Mamma Mia!" is the most fun to be had at the movies this or any other recent summer.

Teenage boys may be glued to the latest action adventure, but the rest of the family will have a rollicking good time dancing in the aisles to Swedish pop group ABBA's irresistible songs. It's a delightful piece of filmmaking with a marvelous cast topped by Meryl Streep in one of her smartest and most entertaining performances.

After its world premiere in London on Monday, the film opens in the U.K. on July 4 and in North America on July 18. It will surely follow the stage show around the world in pleasing audiences and raking in what one of the infectious songs celebrates: "Money, Money, Money."

If the Movie is half as good as the Stage Production I attended then I predict this will be one of the summer's biggest movies.

The music is of course fantastic and the comedy is witty and sharp. (In the stage production there is a very stern warning in ominous tones before the production begins: Warning! This play contains platform boots and white spandex pants.

Add to that the fact you get to see a Former James Bond Dancing and singing while wearing Spandex and Lycra and you have the recipe for some high caliber entertainment.

I was pleasantly surprised with how good the stage version was. My wife and I are considering going to see the theatrical version once it's out - and we haven't seen a movie in the theater in about two years.

Looking forward to seeing it in the theatres, first time in I don’t know how many years.

I too will be attending a movie theater for the first time in several years.

Just because I can't wait for the DVD on this one.

Part of the success of the stage play “Mama Mia” is that it changes dialogue to match the politics to match the audience of the city in which it is playing. In one sequence, one of the alleged fathers tells the girl lead that his wife would think herself too old to now become a mother. In the Boston version, which I saw, the line is changed to say that the character’s gay male companion would have trouble if he were to suddenly become a father.

I’ll have to go as it has Colin Firth as one of the possible Dads. He’s such a hunk of a man. Pierce Brosnan is good looking, but is rather a jerk. He’s a flaming liberal, and somehow thinks we care about his opinions.

Also, Dominic Cooper starred in the 2007 version of Sense & Sensibility which was shown on Masterpiece Theatre (PBS) in March. He played the part of the scoundrel, Willoughby. He did a good job in that role.

Plus the songs are great.

Not going to patronize any film with Meryl Streep in it.

“Not going to patronize any film with Meryl Streep in it.”

Nope. Another “Mom used to be a slut” movie. There was a time when not knowing who fathered their children was shameful to women.

Thanks for that...I was beginning to think I was the only one who found the premise of this movie to be shameful.

We see it sometime Saturday if all goes well. Have seen the London stage version and one of the U.S. touring companies. The London version was great, U.S. was good. I do think they change dialog a little to match the locale the show is in. Worth the trouble to search in Youtube for various versions of the show. Korea is a hoot, Germany, I thought they stole costumes from some Wagner opera.

They story or plot will offend some here but it's so dumb anyway, just enjoy the music. It's like DNA or paternity tests don't exist.

The music and dancing were fabulous in the play. I really can't wait to see it...It put a smile on my face...

If that’s true, they must have changed it from the Broadway show. Leave it up to Hollywood....

I wonder when they are going to bring “Wicked” to the big screen. Now that will be a movie that would do boffo at the box office.

Even if that's true, I prefer to see the dancing, singing, and island scenery on the big screen...

BTW, we saw 'Iron Man' last night and thought parts of it were pretty boring...

Saw it on Broadway in 2002 six months after 9/11. We had gone to see Ground Zero that day and seeing "Mama Mia!" that night lightened our spirits again.

Everybody is a closet Abba fan. ;-)

Looks like a "movie for women." Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Abba had some cheesy moments, but they created some great music, and were quite influential in bringing about the europop sound.

Sorry, I’m neither gay nor female so I won’t be watching this movie. Having said that I love ABBA...and yes I did see Priscilla Queen of the Desert and I’m pretty sure my girlfriend and I were the only straight folks in the theater at the time....

We saw Mama Mia one month after 9/11, and we went to see the still-smoking pile at Ground Zero before the show. We bought the tickets 6 months before and were wondering how safe it was to go to NY. I'll never forget that day...

My mother, sister, and I saw the movie this afternoon. I thought it was very entertaining and a lot of fun. I wondered about the casting of Pierce Brosnan because he didn’t sing that well, and a few other things could have been done better. I decided to overlook those things and just have a good time with the singing and dancing...The girl playing Sophie is excellent. We left with a smile on our faces. I’ll see it with my husband in a few weeks if he wants to go. (He liked the Broadway show.)
