In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
atoll \AT-tawl\ noun
a coral island consisting of a reef surrounding a lagoon
Example sentence:
The Marshall Islands, in the central Pacific Ocean, consist of five islands and 29 atolls, which are each made up of many islets.
Did you know?
If you are lucky enough to sail south and west of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, you'll find the Maldives, a group of about 1,200 coral islands and sandbanks that form the Republic of Maldives. Many islands in that independent nation demonstrate the archetypal atoll, and geographers often use them to point out the characteristic features of such coral islands. Given how prevalent atolls are there, it isn't surprising that "atoll" comes from the name for that kind of island in Divehi, the official language of the Maldives.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

With the kind of arrogance that would consider a man-made atoll preferable to the beauty of the Greek islands of the Mediterranean, Obama thinks government solutions are needed for the gas crisis.

is anyone else getting the SERVICE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE message, like every other page hit?
Yes, just about every second or third click. It is getting tiring having to hit "refresh" every other page I attempt to hit.

What is up this morning? I responded to Vast and it never posted....?
system is squirrely this AM. it will show up at some point as many times as you hit post, apparently!
Good morning Texasgirl.
Hit refresh (F5) instead of hitting post a second (or third) time.
Good morning
The world may never know even if you and I figure it out.
never knew what any of those Fs were for....
I don’t like our 2008 presidential candidates atoll. Not atoll.
F1 is “help” in most applications.
F5 is the same as “refresh” or “reload” in Explorer; not sure what it does in other applications (although I know in Excel it is “go to”.
F2 in Excel is “edit”.
F4 in Excel will make a cell reference in a formula absolute rather than relative.
The function (F) keys are nice shortcuts if you know what they do. I hardly ever use them — other than the F5 key to refresh in Explorer and the F4 key to hold cells absolute in formula building.
On Cheers, Sam came back to the bar when his boat sank after hitting a small reef that most folks already knew about. It was renamed “No Brains Atoll”.
Yes, my freeper connection is like an atoll in a sea of unavailable sites.

i was looking at cards yesterday and saw some hilarious ones. these have pix of some dolled up 1950s looking women on the front of them and the one said, I hope his wallet is as big as his EGO [would fit in on the men/women bashing FR threads!] Another one has the 1950s smiling woman in the front seat of a car and her saying WHat muffled screams, officer? and you open it and it says the FIFTH is her favorite amendment. very clever.
might it be resolved? i have not had problems for a few minutes here...
I’m reminded of that line from the great Italian literary work-
“Ask-a not for whom-a the bell atolls, it atolls for a-thee...”
are you sure that’s not photoshopped? that’s disgusting.
I believe it is real but probably about 18 months out of date. She is more normal weight now.

i see that the Sup Ct has delayed issuing the Heller decision. all those Holiday Inn express constitutional lawyers will have to wait another day....LMAO!
With a President Obama, this country has no chance atoll of surviving!
The government of a small Pacific island charged an extra fee for tieing up your boat, and another fee for fixing the hull, and a third for fastening new boards to the hull with small nails.
It was, of course, atoll tacks.
OMG ROBT SAID SOMETHING BONAFIDE CLEVER AND NOT JUST STUPID! ; )

For those who feel that welfare is owed to them:
Being that work has taken a toll on my health, a (free) vacation getaway on an atoll somewhere should be an entitlement.
Now that is an image I didn’t need.

Slackers? I was up and out the door to my “play group” before you posted this. Six babies......I had fun.
