The great celebration that has been going on today in the media over the impending commencement of gay marriages in California has left me fearful for this beloved country. Every time I heard the news or clicked on main news items, there it was: "At five o'clock, Pacific time, the State of California will permit gay marriages, etc..." Each time I saw it or heard it was like the tolling of a bell, which reverberated deep in my heart setting off a slight quiver of fear.
My fear is, in large part, based on my religious beliefs. I am an Orthodox Jew. As are many of my fellow FReepers, I am well aware of the Torah's view of homosexuality. But just in case the liberal police are reading this, let me say outright, that I have no plans for capital punishment for gays, nor do I want to see them harmed or deprived of any civil rights. This is not about them. It's about all of us.
Besides the Torah's prohibition and prescribed punishment regarding (male) homosexuality, commentaries tell us that sexual immorality is especially angering to G-d and that it was the sins of sexual deviancy that brought the Flood in the times of Noah and that brought hellfire upon Sodom.
Again, for all you snoopers, I am not saying that I am hoping for a flood or an upheaval. I am saying that, just as G-d has greatly blessed this country, he may do otherwise. Abraham, in his great kindness toward all mankind, pleaded with G-d to spare Sodom and Gomorrah in the merit of any righteous men (at least 10). Apparently, not finding even these, the fate of the people was sealed. An important teaching of the Rabbis is that, sometimes, even the righteous are swept up in the punishments of the sinners if they have not done enough to bring them to a better path.
Are we doing enough to fight the wholesale surrender of our nations' moral heritage? Speaking for myself, I do a bit of letter writing and always choose candidates based on their positions on moral issues. I would welcome any other suggestions for actions that we can take to protect this wonderful land and its basically good people. I also offer up prayers for the country that she should be led by good leaders and that G-d not withdraw his blessing and protection. G-d Bless America.
“Gay Marriage Makes Me Fear For This Beloved Country (Vanity)”
Yeah it’s a bad thing but with all of the other possible things that could destroy us, this is small potatoes.
Marrige will demand that homosexuals give up there promiscity (yeah, right) or else there will be financial ramifications in the divorce proceedings.
As a previous poster said, marraige now opens the door for companies to slam the lid on partner benefits unless those involved get married....opening the door to further legal ramifications.
There's going to be a lot of regret to go round and in the end.....
as usual, only the lawyers will make out like bandits.
“Yeah its a bad thing but with all of the other possible things that could destroy us, this is small potatoes.”
I can’t really agree with that. Yes, there are many problems and threats out there. But for me, as a religious person who believes as did Washington and Lincoln, that America’s welfare came from divine blessing, all the other problems are nothing, if we lose His protection.
How long before we'll have to hear about people who want to marry their dogs - or cows or whatever?
And when will California judges decide it's OK to marry a horse? They're probably chomping at the bit as we speak... /sarcasm
Although you are kind of kidding, I think we have a ways to go before the term “animal husbandry” comes to be taken literally. In the meantime, what argument is left against polygamy right now?
the namgla (north American man gerbil love association) will be upset with your comment.
Thank you.....I too am sickened by this. And afraid for this country.
“I cant really agree with that. Yes, there are many problems and threats out there. But for me, as a religious person who believes as did Washington and Lincoln, that Americas welfare came from divine blessing, all the other problems are nothing, if we lose His protection.”
A man and woman in a committed loving relationship is the bedrock of all civilizations. If we move away from this we will cease to function as a truly free society. While communism, fascism, socialism, have all been threats to America, libertine beliefs may prove to be its downfall. Because America will corrode from the inside and turn against itself. Many people won’t be able to recognize what is right and wrong, what is natural and what is unnatural. I agree with you, gay marriage and the slaughtering of the unborn are very very important issues.
Like it or not or even believe it or not, God is in charge.
Lest you don't believe it, try wondering why the earth remains in just the right position, as do the rest of the planets, as they rotate around the sun.
Why do they not move off course, reverse course, or the sun move out of position?
Why do we, here on earth, have just the correct blend of oxygen and nitrogen, to continue breating?
Because all have a Master Designer, who has a Master Plan and He has told us, His creation, what he finds abominable.
He has also told us what has happened to those societies who have flaunted our freedom, from Sodom to ancient Greece and Rome.
Thank you. Your thoughts add much: besides divine protection, the breakdown of the family is very closely tied with the larger breakdown of the entire moral fabric.
I agree. I’m just waiting for these libs to appeal the 2nd amendment so a Civil War will ignite.
Gun rights, raising taxes and the demoralization/cuts to our military are on the top of my list.
CA: Limit on Marriage. Constitutional Amendment (California Marriage Protection Act)

Right, if we don’t understand where are rights come from and who is the author of liberty and freedom, we will lose the ability to reason. It’s already happening. I don’t want to sound alarmist, but it’s a dead - serious issue.
You’re right. With this new development there is hardly any combination of human beings (and possibly other species) that should not be “constitutionally protected”.
God helps the nation that turns to Him. 2nd Chron 7:14-17
And God helps those who help themselves.
The battle is joined in California. Do what you can where you can to make the right things happen.

“Yeah its a bad thing but with all of the other possible things that could destroy us, this is small potatoes.”
I disagree. This divide is at the very heart of our nation’s social fabric. I ask what it says that the only societies on earth who have accepted gay marriage are so inherently dysfunctional that they are unable to do something so basic as to produce the next generation. Entertaining the very thought of “gay marriage” says something not only perverse about a society, but also something very sick about the way it views family to start with.
We grow up with the expectation that we will have children. We impregnate that into our children. It’s how we raise them. Now, that’s all disappearing. It becomes a matter of, “Well, Johnny, if you marry someone of the opposite sex, then you can have kids. But if you don’t, that’s okay.”
And it’s not okay. Not in a society that wishes to remain self-perpetuating.
It’s just as things happened with unilateral divorce—we were told it wouldn’t affect divorce rates substantially. Yeah, freaking right. The same thing with accepting having children out-of-wedlock.
Now we have millions of kids who grow up without parents or from split homes. And I ask: which is more damaging to our society? That? Or al-Quaida?
I think it’s very clearly the disintegration of the American family, and this only helps perpetuate that.
Right you are. And the further we move away from our moral (Biblical) founding, the closer we are to His mighty judgment. We’ve been protected from those “things” which might have lead to America’s downfall thus far because of our predecessors’ Biblical compass.
Thank you for your wise thoughts. I agree. I am trying to get the word out that we can still vote on this, maybe the Good Lord, in His mercy, will give us one more chance to remedy this in November.
Get out and vote for this in November California!

I hope that you and others can keep focus on this issue through the election. It may have an additional bonus: if good, moral folks are driven to the polls because of the issue, it could give McCain an unexpected boost in a big state.
I’m not a great fan of McCain, but he sure does beat the alternative by a mile.
I’m with you. I hope the California voters shut this down.
The press celebration is sickening to watch.
“...I’m not a great fan of McCain, but he sure does beat the alternative by a mile.”
Same here. Keep in mind the body builder did win the governorship and he and McCain have similar appeal to moderate voters, which could bring out a strong turnout.
Personally, I’m hoping there’s a huge push from the angry voters who voted in Prop 22, which could lead to a victory.
Oh, and thank you so much for your encouragement.:)
As a resident of California I assure you I will vote for an amendment to the State Constitution limiting legal marriage to a man and wife. I hope and pray many more will do so as well.
But unbridled socialism does not?..
The socialists murdered some say 200,000,000 people in the last century and made billions miserable.... and more than one million people(babies) are murdered yearly in the U.S. alone and liberals are worried about baby seals..
Gay marriage is just a symptom.. is a greater disease.. The disease is democracy which creates socialism.. another symptom.. the disease is democracy.. The American Republic is no more..
God will not be mocked, sanity will reign....eventually!
As far as morality goes, you take care of yours and let other people take care of theirs.
Jewish, I’ve sure been praying hard over this issue. What was it Jay Leno once said? “If God doesn’t destroy California, then he sure owes Sodom and Gomorah a big apology”.
Now “thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God”, but I sure hope He’s hearing our prayers. Folks of all different religions, if you care about this, then pray about it... hard.
“How long before we’ll have to hear about people who want to marry their dogs - or cows or whatever?”
Polygamy will come next. Then bestiality. Then pedophilia.
I used to hesitate to say it, but I don’t after this decision. I believe America has been abandoned by God.
I so agree with you JewishRighter. God will NOT be mocked. He is Soverign and Holy.
America needs to fall on her knees and repent...I see peril written on the skies!
Certainly, if there were a checklist for a civilization on the decline, the promotion of homosexuality and the destruction of the institution of marriage would be boxes to tick.
Pray with your feet by precinct walking, they will need everyone’s assistance...get all your friends on board tooo...you will never regret it....
What most of the sheep don’t understand is first the left creates the type of chous we are having now, then that put into place this type of crap.
People then think we have bigger fish to fry, meanwhile our country is being destroyed from within.
It’s no accident that cap& trade, impeach Bush, amnesty, and other actions are taking place all at the same time.
It overwelms the senses.
It doesn't matter whether or not one believes it for God to end His protection on us for our flaunting His laws.
He is in charge of His ultimate plan, not us.
“if we lose His protection.”
I believe that is a forgone conclusion for quite some time now.
Hey, I believe in God. I worship regularly. I read my Bible. I even understand some of it. I also do not believe that gay “marriage” is a good thing. I can even understand why you might believe that God will punish US for the decision of a few lawyers in black robes. I just think that He might hold off until after the people have a say.
It is not our society that wants this perversion. In fact whenever the people have been given a chance to vote on the issue, they vote against it. It will be the same in California this November.
I totally agree with you. I’m a Christian, homosexuality is no longer prosecuted by death in the New Testament so that argument doesn’t wash with me. Historically, civilizations that have abandoned their moral compass have gone by the wayside, America will be no different. This is another brick removed from the wall, a huge brick. God bless.
And what will be the glue that holds any faction together if a civil war comes about? God blessed this nation because of our Founding Fathers adherence to the Almighty, or at least to the pursuit to that ability. We are unraveling at an alarming rate.
Unbridled socialism is indeed a great problem, but I think it is more of a symptom than the disease. G-dlessness leads to socialism more than the other way round. When modern man began to see himself as the center of the universe and the absolute master of his own destiny, he opened up the door to ideologies that sought to replace the moral structure of civilization with “new, improved” ideas for the perfection of humankind. This is why Marx had to attack religion as the opiate of the masses: much in the same way Obama does today. Once we can be convinced that the only moral authority is the government, socialists can seize control of all institutions and reorganize them in their own image.
Socialism didn’t remove religion from public discourse. It exploited the abandonment of G-d to metastasize into the monstrosity that is government today.
“As far as morality goes, you take care of yours and let other people take care of theirs.”
Well, I can’t exactly disagree, since all morality stems from our individual conduct. But since we live in together in organized social and political communities, I can’t ignore the moral behavior of my fellows, any more than I can ignore the moral behavior which is either promoted or tolerated by the governing authorities. There is a civic duty to participate in that which affects the welfare of our society, even if you don’t believe in G-d. Beyond that, my post is simply saying that, as a religious person, I feel deeply concerned by this latest assault on our ancient moral traditions.
Your point of view is not uncommon, but it is decidedly contrary to the great founding fathers and Lincoln, who all maintained that morality was a matter of the national interest and a prerequisite to G-d’s grace.
As peace loving as I am, I can’t say that I would miss San Fransisco all that much if G-d happened to want to make an example. Having said that, I hope he does so on a day when the good people of San Fransisco (I assume there are some left) are all off on vacation.
“I’m hoping this is the last affront the lord accepts from that filthy place and puts his foot down with a nice 10.5 quake.”
Oh really? Would that make you sleep easier at night? Are you happier now that the sinful people of Cedar Rapids, IA have had a little taste of God’s wrath? Just too bad that a bunch of churches flooded in the process, huh?
California is the home of Free Republic and quite a few wonderful people who post here regularly. Would the destruction of their homes, the disruption of their lives, and their possible deaths really justify your satisfaction that some folks who aren’t quite as holy as you got what was coming to ‘em?
God will have plenty of time to deal with these folks (and each of us, too) on an individual basis.
“Oh really? Would that make you sleep easier at night? Are you happier now that the sinful people of Cedar Rapids, IA have had a little taste of Gods wrath? Just too bad that a bunch of churches flooded in the process, huh?”
Whoa, there, I don’t think BigCinBigD needs any defending but I do think the comment about a 10.5 quake should be taken as a bit of tongue in cheek, a frustrated expression of the disgust many feel with the trend of things out there on the left coast. I don’t think he’s hoping for a lot of innocent people to get killed any more than he wants to see churches washed away.
Agreed. And He will judge them by their actions.
Homosexuals are and will always likely be around 3 percent of the population. Out of this 3 percent, how many will "marry?"
It's not like there are untold numbers of Americans who are waiting for the right climate to proclaim their "gayness."
I don't have strong feelings either way on this issue. IMO, there are bigger issues than a small percent of the population of what is already a small percent of the population getting married.
“Whoa, there, I dont think BigCinBigD needs any defending but I do think the comment about a 10.5 quake should be taken as a bit of tongue in cheek”
I guess it’s possible, but it sure didn’t sound like it from the context. Perhaps a little emoticon next to such a call for natural disaster would have cleared things up. You know... the way that most people in California talk about 10.5 quakes, with a little “;-)”
