JIM GILMORE

Posted on 06/11/2008 10:56:54 AM PDT by 7thson

I need some information from Virginia Freepers. Ex-govenor Jim Gilmore is running for the Senate. Recently, two Virginia Republicans - Former Delegate Vince Callahan and former state Senator John Chichester - have come out and endorsed the Dem.

Was Gilmore unpopular as Governor? Didn't Warner raise taxes in Virginia? I have the impression that Gilmore made a promise - to get rid of the car tax - and then fulfilled that promise. Is my impression wrong?

I appreciate any information. Thank you.

True, but could only serve 1 term due to Virginia's term limits on governor.

His campaign slogan was “No Car Tax!”

He did away with a portion of the car tax, but not all of it.

Gilmore, popular? I think he was respected and people saw him as competent.

The first thing Mark Warner did was raise taxes, then it was discovered that the increase was unnecessary as Virginia came away with a large surplus(even if there had been no tax increase). We never got that money back. Thanks, Mark.

Unfortunately, Mr. Gilmore is going to creamed in this election.

Pity.

Chichester is a tax-raising RINO. His words are unimportant, and we do not hear them. (I just called the Klingon a liar, Jim.)

Another example of the voters rewarding a Democrat for the great job his party is doing in the senate...unbelievable!!

Gilmore did everything he could to get rid of the car tax by starting the phasing out process. The State house and senate dragged their feet big-time on getting it done. I don't live in VA anymore, but from everything I hear and read, things are out of control. Getting rid of the car tax was a campaign weapon he used against Don Byer, a Volvo dealer from Falls Church. Pure genius!

Gilmore was a good governor, is a good guy and would make a good Senator. The key to winning is to campaign throughout the state - IN PERSON - something that Allen failed to do this last go around.

I’m an ex-VA resident and Gilmore got the car tax reduced. What happened was everybody voted for Gilmore because nobody likes that @#$@#$ tax but voters in the Soviet Socialist Republics of Alexandria, Arlington, Richmond, Hampton Roads, etc. kept sending the same tax-n-spend liberals back to Richmond. Naturally, they didn’t want to eliminate the car tax so the best we got was a slow “phasing” out process that pretty much got stopped with Gov. Warner.

Gilmore got picked up by the RNC and then was widely blamed in the press for budget problems.

Unfortunately what was once mostly a conservative state has been stained by liberals who moved in from Joisey or Noo Yawk or whatever, bringing their stinky politics with them.

Gilmore was a very good attorney general too before he was Governor, and was Henrico County attorney before he ran for AG. He has a strong crime-fighting record. He implemented George Allen's no-parole policy and started a very effective gun-crime enforcement program. He is more of an old-fashioned conservative who emphasized crime and taxes instead of social issues that turn off the moderates in northern VA (which is also why he is the last Republican to win a race for Governor or Senator there). Don Beyer was liberal, but he is also from northern VA and a handsome guy with a hotshot TV-host wife, and a devout Christian (I went to church with him and really like him personally, though I did not vote for him.) Yet Gilmore buried him in the general election.

Do not count Jim Gilmore out of this election. He knows Virginia like few others and he knows how to win an election. Warner is going to be dragged down by Barack Obama in Virginia, and he is not going to be able to define Gilmore as a right wing nut because the people already know Gilmore and like him.

I left Virginia in 2004 after 20 years. Among other things, I was sick of having an antisemitic, bigoted crook (Jim Moran) as a congressman and a liberal establishment in Alexandria that has ruined the schools.

You say that as if it is a good thing.

When are conservatives (and I am assuming you are one) going to quit letting the left frame the debate for them?

When are they going to step up to the plate and fight for their principles as if their very lives depended on it?

Until they are willing to do this, the moderates/liberals in the GOP and the Marxists/Socialists in the Democrat Party and Media will continue to move the GOP to the left.

Another question - is Virginia still a Project Exile state? I remember when Allen and Gilmore were Governor’s driving into Virginia from DC or Maryland, below the Welcome to Virginia signs you would see a sign stating Virginia was a Project Exile State. I noticed recently that I do not see those signs now.
