Excited, at last, just to meet her,
Till I got a small whiff of her feet, or,
Some other scent,
That t’weren’t heaven sent,
She was pretty, but with one hell of a fetor!

(Gals - I’m sure this works well in gender reversal, too!! ;-)

The fetor of rotting tomatoes is going to grow, if a handle is gotten on the salmonella problem quickly.

The fetor that will remain after the Democratic Convention in Denver has some worried, and now preventive measures are being made to insure that that a chinook wind will arrive off season to air the place out.

Apparently so. Grape and cherry tomatoes are safe, as are those you buy "on the vine." USDA has issued a list of states that tomatoes from are all safe, including Arkansas and Florida.

It’s just like the spinach contamination with E. coli a couple of years ago. I’m certain that the tomato fields were contaminated with run-off water from a livestock operation. In this case, probably from poultry since the organism is Salmonella.

Of course all the xenophobes on FR are convinced that illegals are sneaking into the fields and intentionally pooping on the produce.

Um-hmm.... let's thing about this...

xsmommy in VA (first 2 letters of "VAST")
vast in TX (which could stand for "tasty xsmommy")

I think there's more than meets the eye here.

Washing your produce properly will go a long way toward stopping such problems.

I do not use chemicals in my field, nor do I poop out there, yet I still wash everything that comes from there before I eat it.

...yet I still wash everything that comes from there before I eat it.

I can imagine the salmonella being internal to the fruit (either recently absorbed through the roots or saturated into a break in the skin).

To be perfectly honest, I have absolutely no clue. When it comes to the grape and cherry variety the “not on the ground” concept has merit, as those plants tend to not have fruit on the ground. Romas (italian plum) are on the list of varieties of concern, and those plants do tend to grow on the ground if not artificially propped up.

As I understand this outbreak, the tomatoes are internally contaminated. Washing or externally decontaminating is important, but may not help in this instance. The only thing that will kill internal bacteria is cooking.

Or did sins of her past
Leave the voters aghast
At the smell and the stench and the fetor?

As far as I know, and believe me I’m no expert, a break in the skin is about the only way it would become internal. But if it is internal, all one needs to do is cook the fruit -— of course one doesn’t know if it is infected.....

The source of the outbreak hasn’t been pinpointed, but the FDA said some states have been ruled out, so tomatoes of all types are safe if grown in Arkansas, California, Georgia, Hawaii, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Tomatoes grown in Belgium, Canada, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Israel, Netherlands and Puerto Rico are also deemed safe.

I don’t know how they determine it, but apparently someone knows

Florida’s agriculture commissioner said today that Florida-grown tomatoes have been deemed safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which warned about a multi-state salmonella outbreak that has sickened 145 people and left at least 23 hospitalized.

“I was confident Florida was not the problem and was not the source of the salmonella outbreak impacting other states,” Commissioner Charles Bronson said. “Florida tomato growers have one of the most stringent tomato production programs in the nation.”

Bronson said the FDA has added Florida tomatoes to its list of states with “safe to eat” tomatoes.

During growth, the plant absorbs water through its roots. If the water is contaminated with harmful bacteria, they are absorbed, too. The bacteria grow and multiply in the fruit without causing spoilage or obvious damage. If the food is ingested raw, live bacteria harmful to humans is released and cause disease.

Bacteria occur in fruits and vegetables naturally. Most of the time the bacteria aren’t harmful to humans and we can eat raw fruits and vegetables without becoming ill. In this case, the crops’ irrigation water was contaminated with harmful bacteria.

so i guess i have to closely examine the tomatoes in the safeway to see from whence they are coming. i would hope that safeway would not put them out if they came from a potentially infected state, but can’t rely on others for that, i would guess. i don’t cook tomatoes, i only like them on a sandwich or in a salad.
