Word For The Day, Wednesday, June 4, 2008 - tawdry
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 06/04/2008 | The Janitor

Posted on 06/04/2008 4:39:47 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

tawdry • \TAW-dree\ • adjective

cheap and gaudy in appearance or quality; also : ignoble

Example sentence:

Tom and Pam found themselves in an unfamiliar section of the city, walking by tawdry storefronts and shady bars.

Did you know?
In the 7th century, Etheldreda, the queen of Northumbria, renounced her husband and her royal position for the veil of a nun. She was renowned for her saintliness and is traditionally said to have died of a swelling in her throat, which she took as a judgment upon her fondness for wearing necklaces in her youth. Her shrine became a principal site of pilgrimage in England. An annual fair was held in her honor on October 17th, and her name became simplified to St. Audrey. At these fairs various kinds of cheap knickknacks were sold, along with a type of necklace called "St. Audrey's lace," which by the 17th century had become altered to "tawdry lace." Eventually, "tawdry" came to be used to describe anything cheap and gaudy that might be found at these fairs or anywhere else.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with today's WFTD.

Some attribute hillary's loss to her tawdry husband, but I think it is also because she is a shrill and bitter marxist.

Hillary lost because of the man from Hope

No pushing at the door please!

Happy Humpday Everybody!

s traditionally said to have died of a swelling in her throat,

Known to medical types as "Quinsy" or peritonsillar abscess. Also the purported cause of death of George Washington.

I don’t see where Judy of Rude fame is implicated. If Rudy G is keeper of the tape, clearly someone from his camp leaked this way too early.

Also, I think Roger Stone was backing Rudy this go round.

There is some debate amongst medical historians as to whether his cause of death was quinsy or Ludwig’s angina, which is a suppurative infection of the floor of the mouth.

Mack The Knife

Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear

And it shows them pearly white

Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe

And he keeps it … ah … out of sight.

Ya know when that shark bites, with his teeth, babe

Scarlet billows start to spread

Fancy gloves, though, wears old MacHeath, babe

So there’s nevah, nevah a trace of red.

Now on the sidewalk … uuh, huh … whoo … sunny mornin’ … uuh, huh

Lies a body just oozin’ life … eeek!

And someone’s sneakin’ ‘round the corner

Could that someone be Mack the Knife?

A-there’s a tugboat … huh, huh, huh … down by the river don’tcha know

Where a cement bag’s just a’droopin’ on down

Oh, that cement is just, it’s there for the weight, dear

Five’ll get ya ten old Macky’s back in town.

Now, d’ja hear ‘bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe

After drawin’ out all his hard-earned cash

And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor

Could it be our boy’s done somethin’ rash?

Now … Jenny Diver … ho, ho … yeah … Sukey Tawdry

Ooh … Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown

Oh, the line forms on the right, babe

Now that Macky’s back in town.

Aah … I said Jenny Diver … whoa … Sukey Tawdry

Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown

Yes, that line forms on the right, babe

Now that Macky’s back in town …

Look out … old Macky is back!!

Ludwig’s angina, which is a suppurative infection of the floor of the mouth.

I recall that Monica Lewinsky used her mouth instead of her angina.

Well this does mean the first alleged transcript was false because it mentioned Katrina which was 2005. Now we have the event back to 2004, when her husband was running for the Senate.

I’m hoping this isn’t a hoax like Fitzmas was. In fact, the same guy started this rumor as started the Rove indictment for Fitzmas story.

yeah, hard to know. didn’t someone on the thread say this was before Obams delivered the Dem convention speech? someone is asking how she could be so stupid. not stupid, POLITICALLY TONE DEAF, but that is not surprising in the slightest. these people are true believers and think this stuff is well known and accepted, bc in their circles, it is.

Well the picture of Michelle my bell and Mama Farakahan was taken sometime between June 26 and July 1 of 2004. A solid month before Obam’s keynote speech.

Clearly, if real, this was a spontaneous act that was not covered by the Enemdia and the Keyesters didn’t find it.

McCain had them cheering and applauding throughout his speech.

Obama is getting polite applause - no cheering.

Tawndry Robert’s irritating “high roller” advertisements for Lost Vegas timeshares are only a part of the hih advertising costs - add in the sales commissions, and you can find out why timeshares cost so much.
