Why So Much Religion?
May 28, 2008 | MississippiMasterpiece

Posted on 05/28/2008 10:20:52 AM PDT by MississippiMasterpiece

It seems there are more and more religious posts every day on Free Republic. Posts bashing this belief or that one...posts on Mormons, on Catholics, who's going to Heaven...who's going to Hell...theology, etc. Has the site turned into "Free Religion?" There are hardly any conservative topics in News anyore. It's degenrated into a bunch of religious people trying to convince others whose beliefs are best. Why is that?

People like to talk about things that are interesting to talk about and religion is always interesting to talk about, though not for the faint of heart.

In one of the latest forum software updates, we lost the ability to filter by category the threads/posts that are displayed.

The Mods have told me that is a top priority for one of the next updates.

It can’t come too soon, IMO.

I don’t know if I’d say it’s true more than it was in the past. We’ve always had that group of posters.

There is an intersection between religion and politics, so it’s inevitable to some degree.

I noticed it too. I don’t get involved in those debates - what possible point would there be in doing so?

I think with evolution vs creation, and the causes of the American Civil War, we have more than enough to debate on this site. :)

Might be a reaction to the threats in everyday life? The left despises any religion, but Christianity in particular. It seems like religion is attacked by the government in some small way on a daily basis.

Maybe a safe haven in a storm?

The problem is that everyone is trained to believe—no matter how crackpot it is—that their religion is right and everyone else’s is wrong.

Everyone should be allowed one religion to knock on, and leave the others alone.

There are dozens of people here who love to start threads talking about how evil other churches and/or faiths are.

The two biggest targets are Mormons and Catholics. There is more hate poured out on this website for those two groups than there is hate for the President on dailykos.

I agree. I wish they’d make it possible to choose just the categories you want to see and exclude the rest. Right now if you want to see just NEWS and PERSONAL/BLOGS for example, you can’t. It’s either view everything or just one category. Seems like it would be an easy improvement to implement.

BECAUSE....... every one is a preacher.. We preach much more loudly by what we do or do not do.. sometimes "WE" even used words..

What are YOU preaching today?.. Oh! yeah... sorry..

YOu are right, there are more pro and anti this or that religion posts lately. “Daily Devotionals” seem out of place here on a conservative (mainly) political forum.

For now, I just scroll past them. If they continue to clutter out “real” stories, folks will just skip Free Republic. Turning FR into Free Religion is a loser in terms of readership.

Whether we agree or not with the "religious posts" it is Free Republic where all can freely post (within decency guidelines) without being squashed like the fascist liberals who censure religious content and bash those who express their faith. Here on Free Republic the religious have a voice to post what they will...it's not called Free Republic for nothing!

I’ve noticed that- but it’s since we lost the ability to filter groups/topics we don’t want to read. Perhaps they’ll fix that...SOON?!?

I avoid religion threads for the most part. I fall too easily into anger and/or self-righteousness when discussing religion(s), there-by undoing any good God may have done in me:)

I lifted this from one of Religion Moderator's comments:

If you do not wish to see RF posts, do NOT use the "everything" option on the browse. Instead, browse by "News/Activism." When you log back in, the browse will reset to "everything" - so be sure to set it back to "News/Activism."

Aha! So that is why I’ve been seeing more of these since the upgrade. I guess they used to all be on the Religion forum into which I seldom wandered.

That's right. It's still possible, BTW, to filter the posts by "News Activism" by clicking on the link at the right, however when one logs off (even if one only exits the browser), the "default" is to go to "everything", which of course includes the "Religion" forum.

So, as of right now, if one wishes to see only the posts in the "News/Activism" forum, one must click on that link at the right every time one logs back onto FR.

Hopefully that will change soon, (back to the way it was, i.e., the selection of Forum preference is saved as a default setting for the user) as the presence of the Religion threads does seem to cause some consternation for some. I like visiting them myself though.

“”The left despises any religion, but Christianity in particular. It seems like religion is attacked by the government in some small way on a daily basis.””

Totalitarian govt has always hated religion and viewed it as a threat to their power and a competition for $$. Donating money to religion-based charities is clearly diverting funds that should be sent to the totalies. The Totalies, the left, and sniveling liberals expect the little people to worship none other than government and those that head it up. Hail to BO’s ears. Hail to Urkel Hussein obama.

Indeed, Christianity is a safe haven in a storm of uncertainty and bigotry generated by the secular media.

Let's see. To be consistent, that would mean that you're not calling anybody any names...what in the world would "high and mighty" qualify as then?

And, of course, we're assuming that you're talking to just ghosts & phantoms...because if you were to do any actual finger pointing or accusations, then that would mean your post was addressed to yourself along with others.

It seems no one wants to mind their own business anymore.

(And you're minding this business of what these threads that you're talking about why?)
