Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Big Brown shipped into Churchill Downs April 28, exhibiting the same ease with which he earned his latest five-length victory. Now, with just five days remaining until the running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), trainer Rick Dutrows main concern is keeping the unbeaten son of Boundary out of trouble and in good condition heading into the May 3 event.
Although Dutrow declined to hold court with the media early on, he eventually emerged from his office to give a brief statement on the condition of his trainee. Hes good, Dutrow said. Everything went good, hes down in his stall, and hes happy and everything went according to plan.
Dutrow planned to hold a more detailed media conference at 10:00 a.m. EDT on April 29. Owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., Big Brown galloped at Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida the morning of April 28, then boarded a flight accompanied by Dutrow and arrived at Churchill shortly before 5:00 p.m. He was followed by an entourage of IEAH representatives, including co-president and co-CEO Michael Iavarone and co-president and co-CEO Richard Schiavo. Were confident hes training well, and its exciting to hear Rick talk the way he does...

“Although Big Brown is by Boundary, a sprinter who has sired only sprinters and milers, it must be noted that Boundary is by Danzig, and his dam, Edge, is by Damascus out of the top-class stakes winner Ponte Vecchio, a daughter of Round Table. Big Browns dam, Mien, is by Nureyev (by Northern Dancer), out of a Lear Fan (by Roberto) mare. And Big Brown is inbred top and bottom to Damascus, Round Table, and Northern Dancer, giving him a Classic-heavy dosage profile of 4-7-23-2-0 and a 1.67 dosage index, for all those who still follow dosage.”

“Janice and Robert McNair, owners of Stonerside Stable, announced that any earnings by their homebred Cowboy Cal in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) will be donated to the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in memory of John Long.”
Cowboy Cal will now be the sentimental story.

I LOVE horse races!!
Well, you’ve come to the right place. Glad to have you.
Post position draw tomorrow...then we get serious. :-)
Thank you! Sure would like to see a Triple Crown this year.
What the hell happened?
Big Brown showed he’s the real deal. Made big move on the far turn, had it won at the top of the stretch. The filly just broke down. Must have taken a bad step.
Did the filly fall down on the track? Did they euthanasize it there?
Yes.
Do you know what they use?
I don’t. Have seen a lot of horses break down, but I don’t stick around to watch and never thought to ask anyone what is used.
Sorry I can’t be more help.
Going to the Preakness?
No plans as of yet. You?
