Yes, when they outlawed running cougars with dogs is when the cougars became a problem in rural areas. I lived in one of those rural areas in OR when the initiative was passed in the 90’s and can speak first hand to it.

Thanks for the pic. When I saw the pic of the cougar on the patio it reminded me of that series of pics, I had them filed in my last computer until it crashed and died.

ya know, I’m curious, Am I the only person that carries a little 9mm with me everywhere in the woods/trails? yes, a .357 would be better, but the 9 fits in my pocket. I bet that if I shot the cat from 15-20 yds, it would run and die. Enough people do this, and they will learn to be afraid of folks.

“That’s what concerned me the most — that it wasn’t afraid of people. It acted more interested in me than scared.”

Big cats that are not hunted by man DON’T fear man. Why should they?

You’re right...When they’re not hunted or run with dogs there’s no reason for them to fear man.

City folks that pass initiatives to protect them should leave game managers alone to manage them, that’s their job.

this is my county and sightings are reported often...

In 2000, a cougar was killed by a train in Randolph County. Wildlife experts at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale who examined its carcass found that the animal showed no signs of captive rearing. It had the remnants of a deer fawn in its belly, not pet food, and its DNA confirmed it to have been of North American origin rather than of South American stock, as would be true of an escaped or released pet. Investigators reporting the finding in the Transactions of the Illinois State Academy of Science described it as “the first confirmed occurrence of a cougar in Illinois in over 100 years.”

It is hard to imagine that this unlucky cat is the only cougar to find life in Illinois to its liking.

Powder..patch..Ball FIRE!

Wish I could stalk as well as the lion in the pic...

I can usually only get within 20 paces before prey realizes its mistake... I’d hunt with a knife if I could get that close...

When we see them, we shot them. It’s bad enough we have to contend with Coyotes, Bobcats and Black Buzzards but to let a big cat get established is bad news. We’re getting more and more reports of cougars and them seems to be steadily heading north, along with an occasional black bear sighting.

And this is west TX.

Thanks...I got curious last night and found them on the net. As I remembered it the pics were taken somewhere in Idaho but snopes has them reported as being taken in about a dozen different states. LOL

No matter, the pics are real.
