When changes were made in FR from what we were all used to I was as annoyed as everyone else. But eventually all the problems were taken care of and settled down, content.
But now the tweaking has begun again. First the "pings" section went from just headlines to the entirety of the posts. Then you had to empty your personal ping list or else it's always telling you you've got new pings (and who wants to delete their immemorial pings?). NOW the pings are in different colors and the PM forms look different!
It was perfect before this next round of tweaking started, fellows. Enough already! Put it back like it was about a week ago and let it be!
Umbriago!!!
Have you considered opening your own forum?
It’s not your board. Jim has every right to have John improve or change it.
Stop whining.
Are you logged in?
; )
I think that it’s kind of fun to see the site change a little.
It’ll end when JimRob is satisfied.

Stop the insanity!
until I noticed it was the default. A new setting in preferences changes it back to clearing upon read.
I like the changes.
Change is good. Obama told me so.
That makes Boston’s third album all the more frightening.
When will the tweaking end???
Never...... things never stay static.
Free Republic Update: Pings, Tabs, Time and More:

Don’t forget “Hope”.
until I noticed it was the default. A new setting in preferences changes it back to clearing upon read.
I don't want to clear my pings. All I want is for it to stop telling me that I have new pings when I don't, just because I haven't cleared them!
I’m glad to get the EDT back; I was getting the PDT even though my prefs were set to get EDT.
It’s funny you posted this because I was just thinking about all the changes when I logged on today, specifically the pings. The pings now are like the articles, with a “New Pings” tab and an “All Pings” tab. Apparently, when one marks all pings as “read”, they get simply moved to the “All Pings” tab (IOW, they aren’t lost, just moved).
I do share your sentiments, the change is a bit overwhelming. HOWEVER, as I was browsing around just now, I began to see some potential benefits to this new system. First, one can simply stay on the “New Articles” tab, because up above are the “Active articles” so they can be monitored at the same time. Second, as far as pings go, they can be now sorted all at once into ones we have read OR, if one wishes, one can simply keep them all in one group and the ones one replies to are shaded in green, for easy identification. With some discipline, this new system can be a powerful way of reorganizing one’s FR activity into something more productive, I’d say.
I will say this though, other than the articles on the main page, all the others, including all pings, do not by default open into a new window, even though my preferences are set to such. Sidebars, pings, the “active” ones in the blue area above, even the post numbers, all used to open into a new window automatically, but don’t anymore. It’s a bit annoying because sometimes I forget that, and, after reading something, I accidentally close out all of FR, because I close out the particular article window thinking it’s a new one. If John is reading this, please return to all articles opening to new ones by default (if one so desires in one’s preferences).
"Change?" "Improve???" That's Marxism!!!
I thought this was a conservative forum! ;-)
Set your default to automatic and it will be just like the past.........
You can do that. There are two buttons on the ping page. If you hit “all pings” everything will show, just as before, but the message that you have “new” pings will not show up until your next ping. If that makes any sense.
So just go to my preferences and make your adjustments. It’s all good.
Thank you!
If you don't like the tweaks tell the people that count. Don't start a complete thread to say, "Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh".

Leave Free Republic Alone ... NOW!!!!
I wish I lived right beside you.
I would paint my house bright neon orange and stand outside in a bathrobe and cowboy boots smiling all day.
It's still a little disconcerting to see so much change in such a short while, however.
Oh well. Just so we don't have any "social change!"
Hell we ought to outlaw automobiles and go back to the horse and buggy since some don’t like change... Wait till they have to scan their cell phone at the store in the check out line to pay for purchases...... Won’t that be a hoot..
“”””Hell we ought to outlaw automobiles.....some dont like change”””””
Being in the automotive technical field I used to get that alot. “Why they have to put computers on cars?? I can’t work on it”
Thats the point. You don’t need to work on it anymore.
I would always respond to someone that didn’t like change in autos with: “Yeah, the 200 horsepower engine that gets 30 miles per gallon and 100k mile tuneup intervals really bites, huh?”
You could try right clicking and chosing "open in new window" or "open in new tab"
I mean, after waiting 52 years for electricity, what's the rush? ;-)
So he does. That doesn’t mean we have to like it, though, and I, for one, prefer the old way.
To each his own.
Agree 100% ____________. Just had to notify the owner of one *Ping* list to take me off.
I can handle the truth BUT can’t handle the HUGE SIZED graphics . . .
Yes, I do that when I remember, however, sometimes I don't, and this was the case I was speaking of. Also, when responding to a ping, if I click on the post # of the ping in question (like yours for example, your post on this thread is #31), if I click on that, it doesn't open a new window automatically (like it used to), and, if I forget to right click and select "Open in New Window", then after I reply to the post, I have to remember to hit the back arrow, or the "Forums" or "Pings" links, to get back to the Forums or my Pings. I suppose this won't be that big a deal since the tabs now have memory, however, it's simply an adjustment for me that's all. Generally speaking, I don't understand why the "open in new window automatically" preference was disabled for the sidebar, pings, and post number links in the first place.
Probably a temporary change to make it easier to work on other stuff.
I would bet those features will come back when he is through with the upgrades.
I noticed the most cantankerous complaint came from a billionaire.
I understand some of the changes can be frustrating, but we will all get use to it eventually. Hopefully, John will redo the “slave window” feature for all the instances we were use to before...but if not, I guess we will just have to adjust :)
As conservatives, we don’t like change. I hope the management still knows their audience :^)
if I click on that, it doesn’t open a new window automatically (like it used to)
One way to handle that is keep your pings open in a separate window, refresh when the ping lite comes on and select the ping to respond to and respond to it in that window. Meanwhile your articles/comment window remains as is for viewing that info. In other words I’ll use three windows, latest post, article I’m reading, and pings. Just my method and others use different approaches.
TEST
Sorry for the dumb question, but how does one change one’s preferences? A text search on ‘preference’ yields nothing on the main pages. Many thanks for your help!
Free Republic * Forum * Account * Mail * Pings * Post * Sign Out * Pager
Click on "Account".
Then click on "My Preferences"
Then go to the "Pings" section, and select your preference.
It is not that we don't like change, it's that we don't like needless change of the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" ilk. It is their site but it is my time and money. After watching this thing change every other day, I think I'll continue to keep both in abeyance for a while. Think of it like a comfortable chair I just got thrown out of.
