A Democrat candidate for US Senate in Maine used this picture to show how concerned he was for US veterans.
Problem is, it doesn't look like a US soldier or sailor.
Can anyone identify the rifle in the picture?

Ping the usual suspects. Expert analysis needed.

I think it’s a British SA-80, fielded by a UK navel cadet/midshipman, with a bad haircut.
Notice weapon is on side, on left shoulder, Brit style. It is also short enough to be a bullpup design.

Very peculiar. That looks like a plug bayonet, stuck into the muzzle of a modern plastic bullpup rifle. I thought these had not been in use since the days of the French and Indian War, as it tends not to work so well when soldiers forget about it in the heat of battle and fire their weapons with the plug in place.
The gun looks a little like the Brazilian LAPA, but that has a standard socket mount under the muzzle.

That pic doesn't look right.
Why would a bayonet be attached to the end of the barrel?
The Brits use the SA 80. I couldn't find a pic with a bayonet.

I’m not an expert or even close, but it looks like a prop, maybe something used in drills? The soldier? has facial hair, you can see it on his right side.

His rifle is wearing a raincoat.
He’s got a fitted rain-cover on it - the bayonet fits just like the pig-sticker on an M16.

If my pic isn’t showing up, search “SA 80 bayonet” It looks like a match to me.

It looks like a match to me. Yep. It matches.

But it took this picture for me to figure out how it attaches:

So whether a person is lefty or righty, in America they all have their rifle on their right shoulder?

99 % of marching is done at “Right Shoulder Arms.” Left Shoulder is for some ceremonial marching only, or supposedly for a rest in along parade.

Why would a bayonet be attached to the end of the barrel? Cosmetics
They want to show off their newest weapon in the parade but for cosmetic reasons they want the end of the weapon to rise above the head of the soldier carrying the weapon.

Notes to AlGore.
1: Don’t put your canteen on your ruck. You can’t get to it while you are walking.
2: Most M-16s work better with the mag in.
3: Why all the creature comforts on your back but no LAW, no extra belt of 7.62, no Claymores, no extra PRC-25 batteries? Will we be comfy tonight?
4: Take the muzzle cover off your rifle, idiot!
5: Take off the pieplate hat and put your helmet on!
6: Take off the rain jacket and put your flak jacket on!
7: Secure all the “hanging lanyards!”
8: Get an effing haircut!

However, you are supposed to go to “Port Arms” for facing movements, such as “Column Right” or “by the Right Flank,” and so on. Otherwise, it’s Three Stooges time.
