Sounds like the United Football League is going to happen in 2009. Prospective UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue told agents the other day it will be an eight-team league (he said six owners, including Mark Cuban, are already in place), beginning in August 2009. The details were sketchy from there, but some agents reported that the minimum salary would be $75,000, the league would go after existing NFL personnel people and assistant coaches to be the league's GMs and head coaches, and the league would try to sign some of the 30th through 43rd players on NFL rosters for slightly more money than they'd make in the big league.

They'll need more than Cuban, though.
Will they be able to play in NFL stadia? In many markets, it won't matter.
I bet they put a team in LA.
Another new football league? Sheesh the AAFL is just getting started too.
I bet that Los Angeles, Memphis, Louisville, and Las Vegas will be on their radar.
The XFL and USFL failed, this will too.
fyi...
Sounds like a step up from Arena football.
San Antonio maybe
Don’t forget Dallas. Once the Cowboys move to their new home, we’ll have an empty Texas Stadium UFL business.
If they recruit good players, which anyone on a NFL squad or practice squad ( some good college ones that missed the draft ) are only slightly less a player that the “star”, and pay them a reasonable salary instead of the multi-million crapola and not try to make the players into this hero type, gladiator, rock star image, I’ll watch it over the NFL.
So did the WFL and the NFL Eorope.
Memphis (Football) Grizzles
Memphis Showboats
Memphis MadDogs
Heck, I’ve even forgotten the XFL name here.
There have been plenty of contenders. Not even Cuban’s money can make this succeed where so many have failed.
I think the MadDogs was the XFL, wasn’t it?
Grizzlies - WFL
Showboats - USFL
No, MadDogs were CFL, Canadian Football. LOL..
The USFL might have made it if owners like Donald Trump & Ed Debartolo hadn’t tried to get into bidding wars with the NFL to sign top-draft picks. The USFL was designed to be a minor league, but some of the owners had delusions that they were the AFL of the ‘80’s.
Is Las Vegas going after ANOTHER deadbeat football league team?
Watching 30th through 43rd level players seems to be their style.
AH - Google is our friend - Memphis Maniax = XFL
I had totally forgotten that we had a CFL team.
I stopped right there. He's a scum and a flag-burner is his soul.
Will they have cheerleaders dancing in the stands like the XFL?
Not to mention RFK Stasdium in DC, the LA Coliseum, Stanford Stadium in the Bay Area (Or even Kezar), Shea Stadium in New York, the Astrodome, the Silverdome (I think that's still standing), the Yale Bowl, Nickerson Field in Boston (at BU, and on the site of old Braves Field), Franklin Field in Philadelphia, U.S. Cellular Field, the Gator Bowl, Ohio State's stadium, the Metrodome (in a couple of years), the soon-to-be-replaced home of the Supre Bowl champions (a new Giants Satdium opens in '09), and others.
Memphis Maniax - XFL
Place to play isn’t the problem. Talent is.
They’ll either try to sign big-name college players, in which case they better have very deep pockets (and not just Cuban’s), or they’ll go for real minor league talent.
football ping
Sounds Huyghue and Series.
Hey, some of us like Arena football. It helps my withdrawal symptoms during NFL off-season. No, it’s not like the NFL, but then, you also have some great athletes without the huge egos. I bet most NFL players wouldn’t be able to play both directions, like they do in Arena. Anything that gives me more football to watch is OK with me.
Bttt
Yeah but they were fun games while they were on...
This may explain why alleged Republican Arlen Specter (I don’t really care if I spelled it wrong) and his CommunistCast buddies resurrected Belichick’s affintity for video during Super Bowl week. UFL on CN8? NFL discredited by nonsense involvment of FedGov in an internal matter? Hmmmm...

The XFL team was the Maniax. I entered the contest to rename the Oilers when they moved to Tennessee. I suggested the Nashville Banjos, but apparently they didn't like it.
My favorite suggestion was the "Tennessee Tuxedoes"..would have been a hoot..
Bud has a way of making friends, doesn’t he?
They’ll probably try to get by with one or two big-time college players per club, the mid-level NFL free agents tehy are publicly targeting, a significant free agent of two, and lost of small college players.
Anyone remember the women’s football league? Didn’t think so. They won’t remember this one either.
