Police arrested a man who used his 13-year-old daughter as a human shield to thwart officers’ attempts to zap him with an electrical stun gun.

Jad Mubarak, 37, was arrested Thursday night after a two-hour standoff at the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites off Merchants Drive where he had barricaded himself inside a room with his two children, police said.

Mubarak was suspected of shoplifting four iPods, software and an MPS recorder on Wednesday from a Target store, where he also allegedly assaulted a male employee who confronted him about the thefts, said Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

Armed with information that Mubarak was driving a black Ford Escort with a drive-out license plate, officers about 7:43 p.m. Thursday located the vehicle at the Merchants Drive motel, DeBusk said.

When several officers approached Mubarak, he ran toward his room. Officers grabbed their Tasers, electric stun guns, to use on Mubarak, but he foiled them with is daughter, DeBusk said.

“He held his daughter in front of him to keep himself from being tased,” DeBusk said, adding the suspect continued to use his daughter as a shield as he backed into the motel room.

Once inside the room with his daughter and 11-year-old son, Mubarak barricaded the door with furniture, DeBusk said.

For the next two hours, police said Mubarak refused pleas from his relatives to peacefully surrender. Officers then opted to break into the room through a large front window and arrest Mubarak.

When officers smashed the window, a piece of the glass slashed down on Lt. Mark Pressley’s hand, causing a gash on the back of his hand, DeBusk said.

Pressley was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where the wound was closed with stitches, DeBusk said. Pressley wasn’t expected to miss any work because of the gash, DeBusk said.

Mubarak was charged with felony theft, assault and reckless endangerment for placing his daughter in danger during the confrontation with officers, DeBusk said.

Police call the state Department of Children’s Services to take custody of the two children. DeBusk said DCS workers opted to give the children to their mother.

Jad Mubarak now there is a good Christian name, NOT.

Sounds like the actions of a misogynist-death cult follower.
