Can a conservative love rock 'n roll? I am sorry, Freepers, I prefer Nirvana to Nudie, I like the Stones over Rascal Flatts, and the Who over Martina McBride. I wince at the deep voiced dudes with the cowboy hats covering their receding hairlines talking about honky tonks, the wife who done me wrong, and my hunting dog by the swamp. Most country music is actually pop music with a fiddle, anyway. It is not anything more than Britney Spears with a steel guitar hear and there.
I can't stand country music, yet I am a conservative through and through. Give me Nickelback, John Mellencamp, CCR, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top over Randy Travis and the other country stars.
Can you be conservative and love rock 'n roll, I ask again?
Poor misguided mind rinded R&Rers .
How can you not like Emmy Lou or Leigh Ann or Patsy?
I was surprised to see that some people think that Woodie Guthrie was “country” as opposed to “folk,” which has ALWAYS been heavily left wing, if not outright communist. The best examples that come to mind being Joan Baez and Pete Seeger.
On the other hand, many of those who LISTEN to country happen to be conservative, so it seems to make sense that it would draw a lot of conservative artists. But of course, there are exceptions. Willie Nelson comes to mind immediately. But I think that his political bent has only come out in the last decade or so. For years, most country artists kept silent on their personal views. Even if their personal views were liberal, they knew that many in their audience were more conservative, so their songs would reflect that.
Whereas with rock, many, if not most, of the listeners tend to be younger, so it would be natural for those who LISTEN to rock to have more leftward leanings, attracting left leaning musicians.
Of course, there will be exceptions to these rules. I happen to like some country (I like some bluegrass, and a lot of “southern rock” or “rocking country”). For instance, I’ve been on a “Big & Rich” kick, and I think Allison Krause is an angel sent from heaven. I don’t know their political leanings, and I’d prefer to keep it that way, thank you very much.

I love rock. I cannot stand country.
They don't come much more conservative than me and I ***love*** the rock of the 50's and 60's.Not only that, but I ***love*** the folk music of the late 50's to mid 60's.And while there are some country songs that I love (mostly the earlier stuff) I can't say that I have much use for Country.I don't hate but it's just not my cup of tea.
I’m with you ... rock over country any day.
It’s not so much that conservatives are required to like Country.
The real rule is, liberals are forbidden by other liberals, from liking Country music.
It’s a very serious breach of liberal, not to sneer when Country music, pickup trucks or Nascar are mentioned.
But Conservatism at its finest, is individualism. You listen to what you like - proudly. :)
AC/DC; Bad Company; Brooks & Dunn; Brownsville Station; Christopher Lund; Carlos Santana & Los Lobos; Phillips, Craig & Dean; The Doors; Michael oBrien; NewSong; Harry Connick Jr.; Dire Straits; Sarah McLachlan; Garth Brooks; Sugarloaf; Jars of Clay; Roy Orbison; The Beatles; The play list just ending. Going to one I’ve titled ‘Heavy Traffic Aftershock’ Guess you can figure some of that one out.
I do like a lot of the gospel rock bands of the past few years . “The late Great PFR” is a favorite. ...Rock On.
I love rock n’ roll.
I also love country. REAL country, not the swill played on the radio these days.
Gram Parsons, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard... These artists sing with a passion few in R&R can match.
If you’re a R&R fan unfamiliar with country and are interested in expanding your horizons, I’d suggest listening to some “alt.country” and “cowpunk” acts: Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Alejandro Escovedo, The Gourds, The Old 97’s, The Long Ryders, The Coal Porters...
I hate mainstream top-40 Nashville country with a passion, but I love most of the old country greats and some of the current outlaw acts like Hank III and Unknown Hinson. I also enjoy bluegrass, old and new. Rock will always be closest to my heart though, metal and punk. I’ve been listening to a lot of rockabilly and psychobilly lately. It’s all a great fusion of rock and country, whether it’s old Gene Vincent tunes or more recent stuff from the Reverend Horton Heat.
Sure. I even listen to Frank Zappa while posting on FR.
I like old country like Hank Sr and bluegrass, but not this new plastic bananna pop country crap they have. But mostly I listen to Rock, from hippy to punk to metal to classic rock. Its all good. Ever heard Regan Youth?
"In matters of taste there is no dispute."
That is to say you like a genre of music or not and that is all there is too it. It says nothing about your politics or your intellect.
To use some food examples, I like anchovies and also liver and onions. These are two foods that send most people running for the hills.
Why do I like them? I just do and that's and end of it.
I do love classic rock too.
Yep...sure can. I was raised on George Jones & the Rolling Stones. Born at the beginning of the ‘50’s and consider most ‘country’ performers as mere posers to the name.
Whats not to love about Black Oak Arkansas and Molly Hatchet?
I LOVE Rock and Roll and HATE country music. So, the answer is, YES! :-)
I’m conservative, Texan and don’t like country. First album was the Beatles and it went on from there. When I was young, country music wasn’t even an option - it seemed like it was for hicks.

Prog rock/metal is about the only music I listen to now. Country music is just too simplistic for my tastes.
Lean more toward hard (NEVER light) jazz, rock (as long as the songs are under 5 minutes), and techno/disco.
Only if you all sing in the church choir. /sarcasm
It can be the other way around, too.
All things are possible with “conservatives”. They are the real open-minded people, and don’t have to fit a stringent mold.
I myself love all kinds of music, including Rock and Country. All kinds of those, too. It mostly depends on if it moves me 1 way or other. That’s all.
