Troubled pop singer Britney Spears was released from a Los Angeles hospital following a visit from talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw, gossip website TMZ.com reported Saturday.
Spears was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center by ambulance on Thursday after a nearly three-hour police standoff, in which authorities tried to mediate a custody row between the entertainer and her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
"Sources say the hospital released her without notifying any of the principles involved in the ongoing kiddie drama," TMZ.com reported Saturday.
The website says McGraw -- a well-known psychologist and author who first gained fame for appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show -- visited Spears early Saturday morning.
The "Dr. Phil Show" is taping a special about Spears on Monday with the show set to air on Wednesday, TMZ reports, adding representatives from the show requested footage of the pop princess from the website.
McGraw issued a statement to Entertainment Tonight regarding his visit with Spears saying:
"My meeting with Britney and some of her family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her."
Custody battle
Federline was awarded sole custody of their two children, two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James on Friday. Spears' visitation rights were also suspended.
Commissioner Scott Gordon has ordered another custody hearing for Jan. 14.
Federline, who married Spears in October 2004, was awarded temporary custody of their children last fall after Spears defied court orders.
"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said after leaving a closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."
The bizarre drama unfolded after 7 p.m. on Friday when Spears allegedly refused to turn over her two children to Federline.
Police were called to the pop star's home at 8 p.m. on Thursday to mediate a custody dispute over Spears' two young boys.
By about 10:30 p.m., there were six police cars, two ambulances and a fire truck in the gated-community where Spears' house is located. Throngs of paparazzi descended on the scene as helicopters taped Spears, lying on a gurney, being loaded into an awaiting ambulance.
The 26-year-old turned over her two boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline at 10:50 p.m., confirmed officer Jason Lee, reports The Associated Press.
Lee said Spears was allegedly under the influence of an unknown substance at the time; however, officers later clarified that there was no evidence of substance abuse at the time of the incident.
Spears' life appears to have spiralled out of control since her divorce from Federline in July. Spears was photographed in a number of strange incidents last year including an umbrella attack on a car. After shaving her head, Spears spent a month in a rehab facility and was involved in a number of minor traffic accidents including an incident where she ran over a photographer's foot.
A phony star meets with a phony TV shrink.....PERFECT!!
I hope they aren’t relying on just his diagnosis that she is okay — yikes!
That’s strictly my personal opinion.
Oh, she's cured now... /rolling eyes
I think that she will pull an Anna Nicole Smith on us...
Meadow Muffin

"...cause ya all know I'D HIT THAT!! "
The Doctor met with her, not she with him. She was not impressed.
“A phony star meets with a phony TV shrink.....PERFECT!!”
And apparently phony TV shrinks aren’t bound by any of those cumbersome rules about confidentiality!
Charlie Gibson should have asked the candidates about this last night. What a missed opportunity...
God bless and take care of those two children.
I understand all the celebrity nonesense and why this is even newsworthy to some people. But why exactly is there a TMZ? I guess there is an audience for it, but wasn’t Harvy Levin at one time a respected lawyer or something? Did he just want to cash-in on tabloid journalism instead of his steady gig on the People’s Court?
Dr. Phil didn’t meet with her as a phychologist - he was TAPING a SHOW - using her because this is what hollywood does. I’ve never liked Dr. Phil, but this is awful on his part to pick this time to “do a show” on her. Someone needs to get her out of the country to a far, far away place that she can truly get some honest help or she’ll kill herself or possibly her kids. She desperately needs to get out of the hollywood scene. Where is her family? (we know about the mom) Grandparents? anybody who has family ties that DOESN’T want to make money off Britney.
Call me crazy, but Brit can still come over to the Clemenza Institute for Wayward Women for “Therapy.”
This makes Dr. Phil look like a real horse’s patooty.
Who needs the National Enquirer, INTouch, People,US,GLOBE, we’veg ot FreeRepublic!
!
Maybe when Britney dies or kills someone, there will finally be attention given to the seriously mentally ill so that they can be institutionalized for longer than 72 hours to figure out how much harm they are to both themselves and society, and thereafter to be supervised enough to have some freedom unless they become dangerously irrational again.
I see a lot of insane homeless, and I can’t help but feel we have let them down by not caring for the truly helplessly sick, simply because they “choose to be off their meds.” I love freedom for everyone, but some people are too sick for freedom and I believe we CAN find a happy medium, allowing people with serious psychosis to find the right treatments or meds to allow them a life of freedom, but if that is not possible or they refuse medication to get them to sanity, then I believe they need the constant supervision of an institution.
Unfortunately for Brit there is no cure for being an idiot.
I just learned yesterday that Dr. Phil apparently lost his license in TX because he had sex with a 19-yr-old patient? Lovely. How’d that work out for ya, Phil?
One documented train-wreck after another.
It’s a circus out there. Politics are just as bad as entertainers
How can a doctor who is producing a for profit show about her discuss her private circumstance with her and treat her as well?
Why seek medical attentiuon when pop theater promises the cure?
What?????
Do you have a link?
Prayers and best wishes for Britney.
It’s in Britney’s best interest to have this play out in private. Additional exposure is just sick.
can we afford another Oprah creation
And, given all the 'privacy' stuff regarding medical things, very unethical.
Isn’t that the Mayor, not the Commissioner?
Clemenza would be better off sleeping with the fishes.
Whadda you mean, what's your point?
No, that is Commissioner Gordon.
RE; #6.
Man, Dr.Phil needs to lay off the tanning bed...
Can you say conflict of interests?
As a licensed psychologist, unless he has a signed release to discuss her case, he has a serious legal and ethical problem.
The fact that he was there for a TV show makes no difference. He was using his professional expertise to evaluate her,he used his training to make his evaluation and we are expected to give it special credence because of his professional standing. She did not talk to him because he was a TV host. She talked to him because he is DOCTOR Phil. In addition, he has a problem in doing any psych work on the premises of Cedars Sinai unless he is on staff there.
If someone comes up to a psychologist at a party and says “Doctor, I’m having trouble in my marriage” that psychologist is not free to repeat that conversation.
Any doubt as to the confidentiality is always resolved in favor of the patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality.
Might as well include Obama then. Tom Cruise too?
“And, given all the ‘privacy’ stuff regarding medical things, very unethical.”
good point.
The last thing this chick needs is to go on national tv this week with this clown.
She needs a quiet place to deal with whatever her troubles are.
Her boys need a quiet place where they can just be kids - safely.
tv appearances will only add fuel to the fire.
I’ve never understood people airing their private demons on talk shows.
Apparently it worked out ok, he’s working on bionking Brittany even as we speak!
At long last, a topic of some substance here on the Freep.
Prayers for more entertainment from the trio of airheads this year!
Hello, Crazy.
I wonder if he had anything to do with her early release since he is supposedly having her on his show?
Oh for Pete's sake! I shouldn't be shocked at anything anymore, but isn't there anyone in the universe who wants to try to help this woman instead of using her?
What a friggin train wreck.
Dr. Phil?? What a complete joke! I watch on average about 5 minutes of TV a week. Hollywood and MTV has nothing to offer except divorce, rape, child neglect, drugs, violence, prostitution, racism, idolatry, lust and perversion. 90% of the people on this site could set Britney straight. Your average grandmother knows more than a hundred Dr. Phils!
My Wife works in the mental health field. She is a supervisor for halfway houses. If the “Clients” say they are leaving, there is no stopping them unless they are dangerous to the public. And if that is the case, they have to wait for the court order to come down before they can forcefully keep them detained. By the time the court decides and issues the order, the “clients” have long disappeared. In short..they have to want to be supervised.
I can list some really bad ones that are forced upon that facility by the state that in no way should be allowed out in public. Yet because of the state, this institution had to take them.
Of course, all states are not the same.
Naw, Dr. P is just using BritBrit to get at "that slutty hot sister of hers".
The Texas State Board of Psychologists has the following information listed from 1989: McGraw, Phillip C. Wichita Falls Dual relationship; Violation-Code of Ethics: Supervised Practice (1 yr); Satisfactory Completion of Professional Ethics Course and Boards Jurisprudence Exam; Physical and Psycho- logical Evaluations
According to the story, depending on who you believe, after being reprimanded by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists for an “inappropriate dual relationship” with a therapy client in 1988, McGraw was required to take ethics classes in order to continue his private practice in Texas. McGraw admits to giving the client a job at his office (which of course isn’t allowed) but denied carrying on a sexual relationship with the 19 year old, who says their relationship was both sexual and codependent. Shortly thereafter he founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc, which is how he glommed on to the great and powerful Oprah.
In 1995, Oprah Winfrey had help from Phil McGraw to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. Winfrey was so impressed with McGraw that she thanked him for her victory in that case, which ended in 1998. Soon after, she invited him to appear on her show. His appearance proved so successful that he began appearing weekly as a “Relationship and Life Strategy Expert” on Tuesdays starting in April 1998. In 2002, he launched his own syndicated daily television show, Dr. Phil, produced by Winfrey’s Harpo Studios.
In 2003, McGraw entered the weight-loss business, selling shakes, energy bars, and supplements. These products’ labels, which carried the brand name “Shape Up”, stated: “These products contain scientifically researched levels of ingredients that can help you change your behavior to take control of your weight.” This met with swift criticism from various sources,[1] accusing McGraw (a clinical psychologist, and not a physician) of lacking the expertise to recommend weight-loss products. Facing a Federal Trade Commission investigation into Shape Up’s claims, McGraw pulled his supplements off the market in March 2004, and the FTC dropped its probe. In October 2005, several people who used McGraw’s products declared an intent to file a class-action lawsuit against him, claiming that although the supplements cost $120 per month they did not stimulate weight loss.[11] McGraw settled the suit in September 2006 for $10.5 million.[12] Most of the settlement ($6 million) will be paid to the plaintiffs in the form of Amway (Quixtar) brand Nutrilite vitamins.
(nodding head) A real professional, that Dr Phil.
