MARTINEZ - A disoriented and possibly injured beaver was taken from Alhambra Creek to the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek this afternoon.| Marie Woods, an employee at the Contra Costa County Community Services Department, said she saw a beaver behaving strangely at about 1:25 p.m. in the area where beavers have built a dam.

"The beaver was just swimming around in the water and he looked so tired or sick," Woods said, adding it bumped into the concrete walls of the creekbed. "He would topple over in the water and then swim away again."

Woods said a bystander jumped into the creek and pulled the beaver out.

With the rains anticipated the next few days in the area, the beavers’ dam may have to be removed..

Shouldn't this be in Breaking News?

I know - I just KNOW - that my fellow FReepers would never stoop to taking a cheap shot on the title. I just know it.

Has Fat Ted been out partying with the beaver again?

Well, this reminds me of an old TV show, " Leave it to Beaver."

One dam sick beaver is not worth 2 in the bush.

Native Americans considered the tail as a Spring feast.

Beaver is a much abused, often misunderstood, deeply appreciated, necessary fauna.

I highly recommend it.

MARTINEZ - The ailing beaver rescued Thursday from Alhambra Creek died overnight at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek.

The animal, which seemed disoriented when a man jumped in the creek to rescue him, was in “extremely guarded” condition with a poor prognosis, museum wildlife rehabilitation director Susan Heckly said in an e-mail this morning.

He was receiving antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and fluids to stabilize his condition, she said.

“It appears that he died in his sleep,” Heckly said.

The museum will try to determine the cause of the beaver’s illness.
