The anguished brother of a teen who died trying to save two buddies from a tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo struggled Friday to understand why the survivors ran out on their mortally injured friend.
"If he stepped in for you, why did you leave him to die?" asked 17-year-old Carlos Sousa's brother, Leo, 21.
He said his family has been looking for answers since the 350-pound tiger got loose on Christmas and mauled Carlos.
By all accounts, the youth was killed trying to get the big cat away from brothers Kulbir Dhaliwal, 23, and Amritpal, 19.
But Leo Sousa said his family's calls to the Dhaliwal family have gone unanswered.
The brothers, who aren't saying much to investigators, could be released from San Francisco General Hospital today

Maybe they were and are cowards and maybe Carlos was not.
They should at least talk with the victim’s family and give them some answers. How low can you go?
I think that sums it up.
Now they have to live with themselves.
Watch this wretched popular culture make icons out of them. Are we that low, yet?
Accounts from whom? If the brothers aren't talking, then who is? And what else did that person or persons witness?
Yes, I think we are at that point.
Victims are the new heroes. Cowards are the new victims.
It’s hard to be certain about the names, but is it possible they weren’t going to risk their lives for an infidel?
I think we can say with near certainty they’re cowards. The question in my mind is what they did to that tiger before it escaped, and to what extent the dead kid was involved.
I doubt that would be a problem for them.
They might ALL be alive...IF they had been allowed to carry guns. But not in Cali - esp. not in San Fran.
No we cannot. 'Dhaliwal' is an Indian name. Very likely Jat clan and very likely Sikh.
Cowards just the same.
Idiots.
I agree and they are probably lawyered up.
Kids drove 50 miles or more to see the zoo????
Well, there’s a red flag and what the devil were the parents doing at this point?
They are the type who would have been plinking at the tigers from the safety of the fence and laughing as they did it!
Maybe this parable will help him understand:
Two friends were strolling down a jungle trail when suddenly they looked up and saw a tiger on the trail coming at them in full attack. One of the men bent over to tightly lace his shoes and the other asked him, Why are you doing that? Dont you know you cant outrun a tiger? With a knowing smile, his friend replied, I dont have to outrun the tiger; all I have to do is outrun you.
“I’ll criticize actions that took place before the attack “
Precisely.
What did they do that potentially harrassed and angered the tiger prior to him jumping the wall, which may have provoked the attack? If they didn’t do anything, why did they refused to tell investigators what happened?
The investigators found a footprint on the wall and one TV news also mentioned that they also found blood in the area separating the tiger’s area and the public area, where people were not allowed to go. What were they doing there? Did they wound the tiger first?
Note the tiger didn’t attack the first bystander next to his area when he escaped, he went after these three guys.
Survivors guilt is very common.
They have nothing to be ashamed of. A 165 pound human is no match for a 400 pound tiger.
Please! These schmucks are walking evidence for liberals that people shouldn't be allowed to carry guns.
They taunted the animal, and the was no liberal judge in the way to suspend their sentence or review their difficult backgrounds.

First of all, I’m not convinced that if I saw a 350-pound tiger eating someone, I wouldn’t run like hell, too. Sometimes, there is really no sense in intervening. And secondly, I’m not at all convinced that Carlos sacrificed his life for his friends. Sorry, but this whole story stinks. And since minorities are involved in a PC state, I doubt we’ll ever know the full truth.
Sounds to me like they don’t want to ruin any chances of their juicy lawsuit by revealing that they were teasing, taunting and throwing things at the tiger after hours.
Maybe they threw Carlos to the tiger?
They are from India, you moron.
And I would advise my son to run like hell instead of taking on a 400 pound tiger.
There was a time that no one would say it was ok to leave a friend who was in danger of being killed, even if the odds were greatly against you. Certainly people still did run away from danger and leave a friend to his fate, but they were called cowards. Times have changed. Perhaps not for the better.

Police and zoo officials recanted.
They now say there was NO shoe found inside the enclosure.
Will Larry King book them?
“Throwing Carlos to the Tiger” You may be on to something there. This whole thing stinks like day old fish in the sun!
They refused to even give the name of Carlos or their own - refused to cooperate with the police. This, along with other info implies they were guilty of a criminal act.
I have no sympathy for the brothers.
Here’s a random thought. Let’s tie Khalbir Dhawali to a tree and coat his body in Catnip! Then let Kitty loose!
Maybe the next time a tiger gets lose they can call you and you can handle it with a switch.
The source said neither brother showed much concern for Carlos.
“They were more concerned with their car in the parking lot and that it would be okay,”
Here’s Carlos’ original MySpace page. It’s been replaced by a “Memorial” version.

I viewed many of his “friends” - Gangstaz all
I am sure there are many soldiers who saw their friends being killed but could not help at the time.
Running into 50 calibre machine gun fire armed with only your pocket knife screaming, “Leave my friend alone” may be considered brave. But it would also be very stupid.
Have never read that where is the link to the bystanders statement that had the cat pass him up.
Sometimes the line between brave and stupid is thin, I suppose. And yet, many have done the stupid thing and are heroes in my book. You can think otherwise if you choose. There are fewer and fewer real men in this country, probably because we now live in the era of the cult of self. The only quotes I can find from your namesake seem to revere bravery and I don’t see any where he defines it as only doing the right thing if the odds are on your side.

True, what is the old statement about what you call the slow runner.
My first inclination when I see a charging tiger is to run.
You sir, are an insolent fool. I guess you parents never taught you manners.
Having an Indian name means they’re from India? I must be from ireland, then, and am a moron to know it, according to the Brightest around here! More likely, their parents emigrated from India, or from the Indian diaspora somewhere on the planet, in Asia, Africa or Europe. There are plenty of such Indians in Sillicon Valley. The punks are probably totally Americanized in the worst possible way. Like their dead pal Carlos.
Both Kulbir and Paul Dhaliwal were charged Oct. 9 with misdemeanor public intoxication and resisting a police officer after they were arrested a short distance from their home while apparently chasing two men, according to court documents.
Kulbir Dhaliwal allegedly cursed officers and kicked the security partition between the back and front seats in a police car after being handcuffed in the Sept. 7 incident, the police report said.
The brothers pleaded not guilty to the charges and are scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15, records show.
“The reports indicate they were extremely belligerent with police,” said Steuart Scott, the deputy district attorney assigned the case.
Ralph Benitez, a public defender who represents Kulbir Dhaliwal, did not return calls seeking comment.
On Thursday, Sousa’s friends and family created a Web site to memorialize him.

The two brothers ran off when the friend trying to help was attacked and killed. And there is the matter of the shoe print on the wrong side of the fence which police are comparing to the shoes wore by the tiger victims.
The brothers must be hiding something, because they aren't saying much. If a friend of mine had been killed while trying to save me from an escaped tiger, I'd be telling every detail I knew to the police and his family to help.
Of course, though, I never tease zoo animals. It's not hard to suspect that the tiger had been enraged by actions of the young men (pine cone throwing, etc.), and the tiger climbed up that 12.5 ft. wall to get them.
The zoo's hung though, because that wall was supposed to be about 4 ft. higher, even though the zoo had passed the last AZA expection 3 years ago, so the national organzation is being accused of not enforcing it's own standards.
You don't know much about surnames, do you?
