All four members of a family that vanished Sunday in the Northern California mountains while searching for a christmas tree have been found alive, FOX News reported Wednesday.

"They have found all four, and they appear to be OK," said Paradise Police Sgt. Steve Rowe.

He said rescuers airlifted Frederick Dominguez, 38, and his three children, aged 18, 15 and 12, out of the mountains and were planning to evaluate their condition. The children walked out of the snow into a crowd of media and excited rescuers gathered at the staging area for the search.

Stealing a tree can have a high price.

I'm glad for the family, but the press has been treating this story of "Let's go out to the forest and cut the perfect tree" as just some sort of innocent excursion, as if trees don't belong to someone.

I believe they weren’t breaking the law. An earlier story said they had a permit to cut down a tree from US Forest Service land.

I wondered about that.

There was a local Mexican restaurant owner (not just the restaurant, but the owner too,) who told my hubby that he & his friends hunted deer out west. They cut a limb off of a tree to hang a deer to gut etc. My hubby said they broke the law to do that, I believe they were hunting in one of our National Parks.

His business didn’t do well in our little suburb. Eventually there was a fire at his business & he reopened another restaurant in another suburb. Hmmm...wonder if he had fire insurance on the one that burned...

IF they had a permit, I don’t have a problem with getting a nice tree from the country. I do suggest, a map, a compass, some outdoor experience, and proper clothing in the backpack for making an outting though!

Sams said the elder Dominguez had recently moved to the area and was not used to the weather in the region.

I'd mock the guy but it's such a common story that it just isn't worth it. They're very lucky. The veneer of civilization is very thin indeed.

I've never heard of such a thing and have a hard time believing it given what I know of the USFS. It sure wasn't described that way when the story broke.

Here in the Black Hills National Forest (South Dakota) the U.S.D.A. Forest Service issues Christmas tree permits every year. If we didn’t already have so many beautiful trees on our own property, we would apply for one. It’s a common practice around here.

That said, I’m very happy to hear some wonderful news about this family.

They were rescued by helicopter after they walked out of the snow into a crowd of media and rescuers?

Glad they're all OK. The ex-wife's going to give the dad such a headache.

We constantly have Texans being hauled off the Sandias in various stages of exposure. They figure NM is hot... well it is until you go to 10,000 feet.

Stealing? There's lots of forest service land where it's perfectly OK to go out and collect a tree. Nothing "stealing" about it.

Near Sacramento? I have a very hard time buying it.

Well you see in America the onus is on YOU to have facts that they were trying to steal something. In America we don’t just accept some half cocked claim.

We have gone into the Forest Service Areas in Oregon for Christmas Trees and before that in Arizona and Nevada. We have not gone in a couple of years as we have not been in USA at Christmas but we would go to the Forest Service office and get a tree permit which would indicate the forest areas where cutting was permitted. It made a very good family excursion and I have also gone with my own parents beginning in the 1940's.

The web site if you are interested in getting a permit and live in Oregon is found at Forest Service Christmas Tree Permits

Paradise resident Lisa Sams, 38, the mother of the children, said Dominguez and the three siblings drove up after church, already had a tree permit, and only planned to stay a short while.

And from accompanying article:

BUTTE MEADOWS — Those who didn't purchase a Christmas tree cutting permit in advance were left in the cold Sunday, when nearly all of the Lassen National Forest offices and work centers selling them were closed...The last day to purchase weekend permits in Lassen National Forest is Saturday at the following offices: Almanor Ranger Station, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Mineral Work Center, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and Butte Meadows Work Center, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

You learn something everyday in Free Republic. Now you know you can get a permit to cut down a tree for Christmas in many areas! And it’s not illegal.

Well you see in America the onus is on YOU to have facts that they were trying to steal something.

My post was about what the media had said. The reports didn't say anything about a permit. The post was directed to the media presumption that whatever urbanites do in the forest for entertainment must be OK such that it went unquestioned, just as they presume whatever industry does in the forest must be harmful. I'm just damned tired of the assumption that urban entertainment is the only legitimate use of nature and that ownership of the assets providing that service must be socialized. To me, the very idea of the USFS should be universally regarded as unconstitutional especially since it was instituted illegally in a conference report.

In America we don’t just accept some half cocked claim.

Looks like you did, with evidence to the contrary.

Well actually what you claim in sentence one above is shown not to be the case in sentence two that you wrote. The article was about the rescue of four missing persons not your half cocked claim that they were stealing something. Again you need some evidence, not your half cocked claim.

True words my FRiend, I had a friend who wasn't nearly as lucky in their life. Sometimes I wonder how much we have "advanced" since the last century?

stealing, for cutting down some shit tree? What kind of world do we live in, good grief...

So, if they didn’t have a permit, to “murder” a tree, then you’d be just okie doke with them dying in the snow? WTF?

Trust me, we’ll long run out of humans, before trees...

Trees don’t hate, genocide, torture, butcher each other. No, it’s just people that like doing that.

Here in the areas near the National Forests, the BLM and USFS issue permits to go and cut a Christmas tree.

We’ve gone up into the woods many times (we always go near where the Kims got lost in Southern Oregon) and cut down a Christmas tree. It’s prefectly legal, with a permit, and many, many people do that.
