Crime spree ends when alleged carjacker punched in face
Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | 12/3/7 | Don Jacobs

t seems just about everything went wrong for Michael Artiaga when he allegedly robbed a Tazewell Pike convenience store this weekend.

Artiaga is accused of entering the Bread Box store, 3101 Tazewell Pike, about 10:46 p.m. Saturday and shoving the clerk aside when the cash register drawer was opened, said Knoxville Police Department Lt. Doug Stiles. Artiaga allegedly grabbed a handful of cash and darted for the door.

While making his escape from the store, the 37-year-old Artiaga unknowingly left something behind — his wallet, complete with his driver’ license.

As Artiaga drove away, another employee jotted down the suspect’s license plate information and provided it to police.

Police, however, didn’t have to look far for the fleeing man, Stiles said.

Artiaga had been involved before the robbery in a hit-and-run accident, Stiles said, and the damage from that crash immobilized the vehicle on Essary Road.

With his car disabled, Artiaga ran to the vehicle in front of his at a traffic light and tried to car-jack it, Stiles said. The woman and her boyfriend in the targeted vehicle, however, had other ideas.

“The boyfriend landed a good punch to his (Artiaga’s) face, knocking him to the ground, just in time for Officer Brian Headrick to drive up and place Artiaga in handcuffs.” Stiles said.

When KPD Investigator Ryan Flores completed his probe of the evening’s events, Artiaga was facing charges of robbery, attempted car jacking, drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Artiaga was being held in a Knox County jail in lieu of $51,000 bond.

Moral of the story: don’t rob places and then try to hijack someone’s car. You will get punched in the face and then arrested.

I'm confused, "Artiaga had been involved before the robbery in a hit-and-run accident,..." ?

The story is not sequential, but here's how I read it.

He was in a Hit & Run that damaged his car, but it was still running at that time.

He robbed the store and drove away.

His car finally gave up, so he tried to steal another.

And the rest is history.

Okay, that makes sense after a re-read.

“Artiaga had been involved before the robbery in a
hit-and-run accident, Stiles said, and the damage from
that crash immobilized the vehicle on Essary Road. “

We will see more and more of these errors as some people
only spell check but don’t check for accuracy.
I am guilty of this type of error.

"You will get punched in the face and then arrested."

He's lucky he was only punched in the face. Had the driver been armed he'd probably would have had a bullet or two in the face instead.

I think that eventually would fall under the category of "too bad for him".

The only thing missing here is a good tazing. Well, he did rob a store on Tazewell Pike. Close enough.

Methinks the boyfriend is going to be in hero paradise for at least a couple of days.

This has to be the most common male fantasy in the world. Defeat a bad guy while the little lady is watching!
