I see this as a a Chinese blocking sertain Google links' phenomenon.
Free Republic Blocked at DOD sites
http://realitycheck.blogsome.com/2007/08/13/free-republic/
Just tried to get to FR from work. Im at an undisclosed DOD installation. Its been blocked via firewall rules from work.
Hows that for censorship? Remember, its only censorship if the government does it.
I do understand that there is something were concerned with called the Insider threat, but blocking news sources is dumb and ridiculous. Many of us are already cut off from the outside, or limited to viewing only CNN or perhaps FOX (were lucky enough to have FOX where I am, but thats ALL).
Essentially, private email was cut off some months back, that is we can no longer go to earthlink, gmail, aol, or whatever from inside a DOD firewall. To some extent, I can see that, but blocking news sources is a blatant disregard for first amendment rights.
Certainly, one can find a new job if one doesnt like the rules but these rules are arbitrary and made up on the fly. I know, Ive seen the results from inside.
This will likely be my only complaint at this point, and I will take it up internally, but, before they completely block the internet for good, Im posting this here and now.
You folks out there
if they can make this decision to block certain sites from certain people (I promise you, the FBI and other non-DOD employees still have access to almost everything out there on the internet and DO abuse it) then it is censorship.
Welcome to FreeRepublic.
Uh-oh. Can you name the org? And, are you sure it’s permanent?
If my employer knew how much time I spend at FR while at work, they’d probably block it, too!
There have been some intrusions into DOD recently.I'm sure they block any site with links overseas.
Check with your internet security folks for current status and guidance.
Mine already has. FR has been blocked here at work for some time now. I use proxy sites to get here.
Seems that the number of hits drawns a red flag and the software does the blocking. Not a person.
I take it at face value. Its not censorship. Its not a leftwing conspiracy.
FR is not work related, thats all there is to it.
That don’t keep me away though.....
It IS censorship.
The blog that is linked belongs to a FReeper.
OP is not the person who wrote this.
Don’t feed it.
Check this out.
A few years ago my company used a product called Web Marshall and it blocked FR. I have no doubt it did that out of the box as several conservative sites were blocked, but few DU types. One of the execs must have noticed one day as suddenly it was available, and since we switched firewalls it has not been an issue.
The OP did not write what you are replying to.
So I see.
So..how are you?
How is the internet treating you?
Everything ok?

A government employee bitching about not being able to waste more taxpayers bucks. Chutzpah.
