I just bought a new LCD for myself and a DLP for my daughter’s house. Here’s the stuff I considered: First, what kind of HD connections are available? I would very highly suggest getting a tv that uses the HDMI connection, which offers uncompressed video and audio in the same cable. It’s the new industry standard, and should be for some time. Don’t consider anything without HDMI. Second, will you want to hang it on a wall or put in on a stand in the corner? If the answer is wall pick LCD over Plasma. If anything goes wrong with a Plasma picture it can’t be fixed, and by hanging it the lack of ventilation will kill in in about 5 years or so. If you are going for quality over size consider 1080p, knowing it will look like a million bucks in a year or two when Blu-Ray or HD DVD’s are more common. If you are putting it on a stand in a corner consider the DLP for the best bang for your buck in bigger sizes. Lastly, the weight is an issue. I bought my 40” Sony Bravia 1080p LCD online and saved big bucks on price and taxes. The picture is fantastic, but I had to upgrade my cable box, DVD player and stereo to do it justice. The 55” DLP for my daughter (with 1080i) was purchased at Walmart because it was so heavy shipping would have eaten up the savings on taxes and Walmart had just as good or better prices than online for that quality level.

I’m in the market for a new telly myself and I’ve signed up with DealMac for email notifications of LCD and Plasma deals. There are quite a few bargains to be had out there.

Got here to try it for yourself.

Good luck.

Yep.

DLP and Rear Project HDTV blow plasma and LCD out of the water when it comes to clarity of the picture, contrast, etc etc etc. Just go into a Best buy, and don’t look at the labels...sit at their big display for a second and look at the tv’s in that area... just watch them for a a bit and decide which ones have the best picture....

I guarantee you, DLP and Rear Projection will be what you rate highest... Plasma and LCD are neat and sexy because they are thin, but they don’t deliver the clarity or responsiveness of DLP or RP.

Thsnks for the tip.

The big problem we have here in Houston is thunder & lightening storms. They are always cutting everything off. If my sattlelite doesn’t go out once a week; I consider myself fortunate. Just changed to what I hope are good surge protectors.

Yea, buy a nice commercial grade APC for any high end electronics if you have this problem.

I'd go with LCD. I'm very happy with my Sony Bravia.

but do those ChinaMart LCD's for under $1000 have a lot of repairs?

my husband went out to the day after Thanksgiving sale for me to buy some new Rubbermaid containers ( 50% off from 7am t 11am ...LOL) and he came back with a 44" projection tv..it has a nice pic but after a year and a half we had to replace the bulb....it would have cost $600 but it was under warranty...the next one won't be....( tv cost $1800)

I don’t have any of the newer large screen televisions. But at a pub/restaurant that I frequent, there are two large screen panel tv’s. I don’t know whether they are LCD or Plasma. While I enjoy watching them from time to time, I noticed that people on the screen seem to be shorter and fatter than they are likely to be. What is up with that? Can anyone advise me about that anomaly? Thanks :)

1) What’s your budget?

2) Do you want to buy something that is capable of displaying high definition programming?

3) Do you have cable? DirecTV? Dish? Over the air?

4) How close to a major metro area are you?

Every type has its drawbacks. Mine is a Mitsubishi 55" rear projection HDTV. It has performed flawlessly and I am very happy with the resolution.

They may take up a bit more space than a LCD or plasma, but if it's picture quality you're after, go with a rear projection.

I agree. I just bought the 57 inch Mitsubishi dlp rear projection - its 18 inches thick but worth a little extra room.

I bought a 32” Samsung HDTV on line from Walmart. It was a $100 cheaper on line than in the store and I also got a $100 wall mount free. Shipping was $5.
