Hmmmm ... that must have been some steak knife. Have you ever been up close and cozy with a sea lion? Attacking a sea lion with a steak knife would be like shooting rubber bands at Sherman tank.
This story smells fishy. Pun intended.

You are correct. Sea lions are protected here and they are waaaaaaaaaay overpopulated which has made them a huge problem up and down the coast.

Lots of fisherman have killed sea lions for a long time.
Today most of them try not to get caught.
Your ox is obviously not being gored.

who will be left to help you.

He had no right to stab a wild animal. Even a deer cannot be hunted this way. The human killer obviously lost his temper. He should have been restrained by anyone close by. I hate to burst your bubble but deer can be hunted with bows and arrows. Arrows are nothing but a knife attached to a stick. There is nothing wrong with killing animals. The people who are crying and moaning about a sea lion being killed as if this guy had stabbed someone's child and wanting this guy put away for years have lost their gonads somewhere along the way to becoming adults.
What he did wrong was to break the law. 100 years ago he could have shot the damn thing and never heard any thing about it, we have let the liberal enviros take over the county and pass a bunch of laws that make no sense. Sea lions are a terrible nuisance and also a danger to humans in many areas. They should be thinned out and this idiotic law should be changed to reflect a reasonable penalty, certainly not jail time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with killing a sea lion on the west coast. They are over populated and a real nuisance to man and fish alike. The big trick is to do it without getting caught. If you get caught the hippie minded generation will punish you. My people used to kill them and eat them.

This story is UTTER CRAP! Come visit me next winter here in the Seattle area and I’ll give you a knife and all the opportunity you can ever desire to try and stab a Sea Lion. Even if by some very lucky chance you could get close enough all the knife would do is piss them off or maybe make them back away. Have you ever seen UP CLOSE the rips the males do to each other when they are just playing. You should see the bigger males after they get back here from a summer at the rookeries. Numerous open wounds. This female had to have been caught or trapped to have done this!! I think we all need a bit more info. Personally, one less sea lion is a good thing especially the breeders.

...a group of sea lions took over a Newport Beach marina and caused a vintage 50-foot yacht to capsize when they boarded it.

They should be thinned out and this idiotic law should be changed to reflect a reasonable penalty, certainly not jail time.
That's a perfectly acceptable line of reason.
There's certainly several laws on the books because of extremist groups that should definitely be changed.
The people who are crying and moaning about a sea lion being killed as if this guy had stabbed someone's child and wanting this guy put away for years have lost their gonads somewhere along the way to becoming adults.
Now I expected to see some "Tuff Talk" and maybe even a personal attack or two from some posters, but let's try to stick to the facts as best we can.
Nobody has equated this to killing a child or a human being, and just because someone believes in respecting the rule of law or doesn't care for animal abuse doesn't mean that they deserve to be branded as having no balls.

The big trick is to do it without getting caught.
Please tell me you're not seriously suggesting that it's OK to break any law you don't agree with just so long as you don't get caught?
Man, tonight I feel like getting a hooker, smoking some crack, and shooting that yappy dog next door. It's alright so long as I don't get caught, right?
That kind of thinking is one of the things responsible for the bloated, sticking cesspit of corruption that's hijacked our political process.
It's OK to take the bribe just don't get caught with $90G in your freezer...
You don't like a law? Fine. Help change it, but don't go around promoting breaking the law.

This guy was fishing for sport, not for a living. Its a defenseless animal, who was doing what comes natural to it, eat fish, and to stab it just because it took bait off your hook is a cowardly act.
To: jointheclub
“If there is a law against killing them in this manner then the guy should have the book thrown at him. period.”
You are the one who is missing the point. Not everyone who breaks a law should have the book thrown at him. That leads to stupid ‘zero tolerance’ policies. Judges are supposed to take into account any extenuating circumstances when they adjudicate, and so are juries.

Its a defenseless animal, How do you feel about shooting deer?
You ought to keep some perspective on this. This guy doesn't deserve a commendation and he should get a pretty nice slap on the wrist but not much more.
