Perhaps the BBC could provide some context. 1933 must have been about the same time that John F. Kennedy’s father was conspiring with the Nazis. In contrast to the allegations of the BBC, the Kennedy love for the Nazis was real.
Some of the leading families in Germany backed Hitler’s accession to the chancellory because they thought the alternative was him or some left-wing kind of leader. And I suspect there was a fear of Huey Long, who if he had survived to 1936, could have very well become president.
The New Deal was instituted as a set of temporary measures (which unfortunately became permanent) that were meant to try and reinvigorate the country. FDR only came up with the idea because actually the alternative was a hell of alot worse. This country really could have went for a radical, if Long had not been shot, they probably would have.
Once again, the BBC scoops a 74 year old non-news story.
