Newfoundland woman, 87, shoots second black bear dead in a month

Bears roaming the woods of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula have met their match in Cecilia Smith, an 87-year-old grandmother with a quick shot.
For the second time in less than a month, Smith found herself eye-to-eye with a black bear outside her cabin Saturday in the rural community of Hawke's Bay, N.L. The 140-kilogram bear was trapped in a snare Smith had set three weeks after she shot another black bear dead prowling outside her cabin.
She then grabbed her gun, shot it and later took it to a nearby dump.
This comes three weeks after Smith, who holds a licence to hunt bears, shot a 200-kilogram black bear dead on June 19.
She laughs off suggestions she narrowly escaped two vicious bear attacks within the span of three weeks, saying she's just having a little fun.

In a somewhat realted note, Michael moore today annouced a new film he’s working on about the recent rise in bear slayings. The new film will be called “Bowling for Ursine.”

Canada, shame it doesn’t count for American armed citizenry. Still a great story.

Nuff talk bout how tough them Newfies are, when out and about...

Yeah, but hes not a grandma. That is true, but Grandma didn't jump on it's back and stab it to death.
Kudos to them both!

I’ve heard a lot of stories about grannies with guns lately. There was one about 82-year-old former Miss America shooting out the tires to the car belonging to a thief who tried to rob her.
I thought guns were hard to buy in Canada anyway. This is one reason why they shouldn’t be—bears roaming around everywhere. But then there are far more dangerous creatures on Parliament Hill (NDP members).

You must jump through a few more hoops to own a gun legally in Canada, but we can own them.
And bears don’t ‘roam around everywhere’. LOL.
I’ve had deer on my lawn, but no bears.
I listened to this interview with Jack Layton today,

and when he finished, my blood was boiling.

Haha yeah that was an overstatement...I just meant it's good to have a gun in case you run into a bear.
I have similar experiences when I listen to liberals. My blood often boils when I hear them talk or see posts they make...there is so much misinformation and hypocrisy that needs to be refuted. I think I need to buy some earplugs, lol

These guys need an armedgranny...
Two forest contractors used their wits and a good shot of pepper spray to make a harrowing escape from a grizzly bear attack in southeastern British Columbia.
The charging bear left one of the two hospitalized for four days with a badly chewed arm and some wounds to his leg.

My chiropractor was looking for some advice on a suitable sidearm to carry to stave off bears. He was planning to take a Glock in 45Auto. That would only serve to irritate the bear. I recommended a Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull around the campsite. Use 45LC for plinking and pleasure in the same revolver. While I like the S&W 460 revolver, it is designed for 200 gr bullets. The Alaskan is fine with a 300 gr. Bigger is better when dealing with a bear.

We had a local bear attack near Soda Springs. A man and his son were bow hunting. The son was attacked. His father saved him with a well placed arrow. The story is
here. Not quite as exciting as kanawa leaping on the bear's back and killing it with a knife, but still pretty amazing.

I bought a S&W 460 hunter compensator about a year back. It leaves a 44 or 480 in the dust and worth the increased price. Notice the dents from 480 and scratches from 44 on this 1/4 pipe. Notice the quarter size holes from 460, 200 grain hornady. I hardly carry the 44’s anymore, just the 460.

Knowing that he only had one shot and that there was no second chance for himself and his son. Wow.
Black bears will stalk us for their lunch.

I'm at the Fort McMurray Library in the tarsands area of Alberta.
Sam has had a few close encounters with bears on the way out here.
Here's an example of one such encounter,
luckily the bear wasn't too aggressive and was easily treed...

The next bear seemed quite friendly but Sam still forced him up on to a stump...

I put a 200 gr .454 Casull down my 15" Encore barrel. It almost punched a hole in my 3/8" steel spinner. It was close enough that a 460 casing might well have punched clear through. There was 37 gr of W296 behind that one.
